    Just thought I'd share this.
    1) Ripped with DVD Decryptor.
    2) Split with IfoEdit for backup to two DVD-5s.
    3) Following the DVD-9 to DVD-5 guide added the extras to one or both "discs" (i.e., folders), added missing VTS_*_0.vob, .ifo & .bup files to both folders.
    4) Burned using RecordNow ... the second disc burned without a problem.
    5) RecordNow refused to burn the first disc, which indicates a problem in my VIDEO_TS folder structure.
    6) The problem was in the VTS_05 files (The main movie is in the VTS_04 files). Basicly the ripped disc (before) splitting included VTS_05_0.ifo, VTS_05_0.bup, VTS_05_1.vob (> 1 GB) & VTS_05_2.vob (~400 to 500 MB).
    7) Disc 1 only had VTS_05_0.ifo and VTS_05_0.bup files. Including VTS_05_1.vob would have put me over the 4,700,000 byte limit. Just for kicks I went to notepad and created a empty VTS_05_1.vob file and save it the VIDEO_TS folder for disc 1.
    8) RecordNow then burned disc 1 (i.e., VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folders)
    9) Both discs played as expected in my Standalone DVD player.

I just ripped it with DVD Decrypter than burned it with Instacopy, much easier, and looks great.

I have the same problem with recordnow, works ok in nero with ifoedit. to use record now i first run it throught dvd2one and then it works fine. dont know if its an ifo prob or record now. would be interested to find out as ifoedit is good, too slow, but its free and the extra 15 inutes in dvd2one just adds to my pain, as like most of you i spent to much money on a shit hot system to wait that much time.

  4. John and rkr1958,

Here is what I think might be what you are experiencing. When I make backup by spliting DVD to 2 DVD-R's, end result is original quality without any loss or re-encoding (or transcoding) but that means that I can't put all (vod, ifo, bup) files on each disk.

There is an option in RecordNow DX Options "Recognize the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders per the DVD specification". What I believe is that if this option is on, it will check if you have all files that should be there. If some is missing, it will refuse to burn. By disabeling this option you should be able to burn you disk with RecordNow. However I am not sure if this will somehow affect if disk will play in DVD player. You should test it first on RW disk.

I've learned, luckily on DVD-RWs, that when RecordNow refuses to burn a Video Disc it does so for a reason. I was trying to back up another movie using RecordNow to burn but it refused so I burned it using Nero. The disk would not play in my standalone player. It turned out that I had left out a VTS_*_0.vob file. After I added this file I was able to burn using RecordNow and the disc played fine in my player.

I cannot get nero to successful burn DVDs. I still use it to burn VCDs and XVCDs to CD-Rs. I've had very good luck using the guide at http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/ifoedit-2dvdrs.htm to backup a DVD-9 to two DVD-5 discs. I use DVD Decrypter to rip, IfoEdit to split and correct the VTS sectors (among other things) and RecordNow to burn the two DVD-R (DVD-5) discs.

Does Instacopy split the movie to two discs and maintain the menus and extras?
