I Have a capture card Pinnacle PCTV, i have tried a lots of software for realtime capture (MPEG 1,MPEG2) the Pinnacle software is very poor for it, and it VirtualDub i capture videos in DivX format. But now i have discover.. the WinDVDR, it is amazing software for realtime.
Good Settings for MPEG2 352*288+ 1800Bit+, the VCD format is also Good.

I tried both WinDVR2.0 and WinDVD recorder and WinDVR2.0 offers much better capture quality.

IUVcr is an excellant product, for capturing in AVI. You can use any codec you want. Interface isn't so good.

PowerVCR is just awesome in it's functionallity. Unfortunately you are stuck with MPEG1 or MPEG2 formats (but you can set the bitrates).

  5. Please somebody tell me how to get the WinDVR recorded shows to SVCD so that I can watch them on my DVD player. They record fine on the computer, but when I move the files to a CD, the DVD player says it is a non-playable disc. I know the player will play vcd, and svcd, because I am able to watch vids made using Pinnacle software from my Sony MiniDV. thanks.

  6. The Canopus ADVC100 works OK with windvr to capture straight to mpeg.

I haven't found a way to get the captured output to a vcd though.

The format seems to be different than what vcdeasy wants.
