i recently bought a used video capture card.is an asus v6600 pure.has a geforce chip on it.i didnt get any software for it.i downloaded the latest display driver and installed it.in device manager its listed as asus agp-v6600 sgram v31.40H. i downloaded and installed asus wdm version 1.23. thats where i ran into problems.i then "downgraded" to nvidia wdm drivers version 1.04.now, when i open virualdub, i go to file/capture avi. a box pops up '"video device already in use"
you cannot use this device when another video application such as dvd, video conferencing, video editing,tv viewers,or web tv for windows is already using it.close the application that is using it.if webtv is installed and running on your system, pause the "webtv video and data services" on the taskbar by right clicking its icon and choosing "pause services".
i click ok on the box .brings up another box. video source."select a video device"..theres a pull down window there.in the window is "nvidia wdm video capture (universal)
i click on cancel, and it brings up the "video device already in use" box again.i clicked ok.
the "video source box" pops up again.i clicked apply a few times and nothing happened. i click ok, and virtualdub crashes.i cannot capture video.i cannot even see a picture.im using asus dvcr 2.5 also.
would you please tell me what im doing wrong??i realize it isnt just a virtualdub prob.im hving the same prob with avi_io and a few other capture programs.such as vidcap32 and amcap. also i cant view or capture.im prety sure its a configuration problem on my part.could you point me in a direction where i can find some help??
i dont have a dvd player on my puter.nor video conferencing.not opened anyway.nor do i have webtv for windows.im not even sure i have the right software.
thank you
below is a profile of my computer. and below that is the crashinfo txt from virtualdub

Wow!! A real dump, I'm impressed.
Look here:
ASUSTeK - ASUSDVCRAgent Version 2.0.0.0*
ASUSTek - TV Setup Wizard Version 1.0.0.0*
Either one can be holding the capture device open, especially the DVCR app (it can do timed recording). ICQ supports a camera feature, but generally that's not it.
Do a clean boot, then do ctr-alt-del and kill everything tunning except explorer (your desktop). Then try it. If that works,t hen something you installed to load automatically is doing it. If that doesn't do it, then it's soemthing running as a service and we can go into more depth (do a start/run then type in msconfig......do a selective boot...and you can uncheck things). To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
If something is automatically loading up at start (and if you need to 'un-do' it), here's a a couple of neat little apps (free) that i find invaluable for such: Startup Control Panel & Startup Monitor.
www.mlin.net -
i did as Gazorgan suggested.below is what i did. also, went into the asus vcr.right clicked on the screen and went to setup.theres a video device box.with 2 pulldowns.one is "video capture device".nvidia wdm video capture (universal) is there.the other box is "video connector"..and theres is nothing there.the box is grayed out
i went into msconfig/startup and did the folowing:
unchecked anvshell.exe
unchecked livenote.exe
unchecked nvcplDaemon
unchecked nwiz.exe/install
unchecked austweakenable
loadprofile is in there twice.unchecked the second one
i didnt uncheck all the boxes at once.i did them one at a time.uncheck a box, reboot.try to capture.uncheck another box, reboot.try to capture, etc etc.
then, using enditall, i ended all programs except for
enditall.exe
explorer.exe
kernel32.exe
msgrv.exe
rnaapp.exe
systray.exe
now , when i try avi_io, i got a an error window "fatal error"
"avi_io cannot connect to the first capture device.use the "devices" menu to choose another one!"
under devices is listed microsoft wdm image capture.and virtualbub crashed on opening it.
. i rebooted, and try to capture and get the "video device already in use" error window again.i also uninstalled the asus vcr.
im thinking its something in the registry??using regcleaner 4.3, i found references to asus and nvidia.i didnt delete anything.below is what i found:
