  1. I think it would be nice if there was a section (in the "other" menu) that had a list of retail and freeware software displayed and organized like the current "DVD players" section. Its very difficult to determine what software is good or bad for specific applications on this web site with out spending hours sifting through guides and peoples personal opinions. Softwares like Pinnacle, Ulead, Vegas, TMPGenc, DVDxCopy, DVDshrink, etc.......

Like in the "DVD players" list you could search by: DVD authoring, Editing, Burning, Ripping,.......... Also a rating on capapilities would be nice: Encoding quality, Simplicicty, bugs, speed............

At one time, there was talk of restructuring the Tools section to be more like the Capture Cards or DVD Players sections....

I think it's just taking a bit of time - Baldrick only has so many hours in the day!

But I definitely think this would be a good idea - it would (maybe) cut down on some of the questions that pop up regarding "how do I do this with TMPG" or "how do you do that with CCE".

If nothing else, it would give a central starting place for comments and user feedback on specific software, rather than having to search the forums for mentions of that software...

  5. For this potentilly new software section: I think it would be useful if some fields were "Not optional" if people wanted to submit thier comments about a software. In other words they would be froced to enter the software version # before the post could be submited. Some people have many problems but that is becuase there version is old and incompatible with Writers, XP......

Good idea...I will probably also make it so only forum users can post, to prevent some crap posts and only questions posts.

  7. Thats great

I was just looking through this site for some software. It would be great to a place for ease of learning it also. I have downloaded trial versions of some software and the 30 days ran out before I even figured out how to use it. so I certainly was not going to buy it.

Software and Hardware websites have a tendency to exaggerate what their software and hardware will do

This is exactly what I was going to ask for. I could really use this kind of information in making informed decisions Re: Needed software to buy.

probably should be a check box for what OS(s) you're using the software on. (for me it would be WinME on one box, XP on another).

similar to the matrix in the dvd player section, where it shows what types of media a player supports (or doesn't).

but other than that, it looks great. Also good would be if the top of the page for the software had a brief statement of what it is (like the tools section does at present) and a link to the homepage.

oo oo oo oo... it would be really good if we had a section, possibly underneath the header, where you could enter a link to a good guide if you found one (I know someone posted a bunch of links recently to Maestro guides, that post was chock full of good links).

hope this isn't too much, 'cause even as it is it would be totally useful.

    Thanks

    I will add OS.

And probably also so you can submit guides for just that tool. You can already search for guides with a specific tool in our guides section....and then I can easily also link all guides for each tools in the tools section.

  14. Looks Good.

Will there be a search header like the "DVD players" search menu with the check boxes? People could narrow down what they interested in.

Software with search check box fields like:

Editing: Transitions, Text, Multiple video, Trimming..........
    Capture: DV, mpeg....
    Rendering/Converting: DVD, VCD, mpeg2, mpeg1, DivX.........
    Burning: VCD, SVCD, DVD-R, .......
Picture Show: Background audio, Multiple adio files, Audio fade....
    Menus: Background audio, ........
Ripping: DVD9 to DVD5, DVD to DiVX, DVD to VCD, DVD to mpeg...........

    And more......?

The inputs could be checked off in the "Add Comment" like in the "DVD Players" list. The defualt would be "Don't know".

I will probably add features myself (or if someone is interested in helping me "moderate" list). But it will take some months too add features, I will take one section at a time, like dvdripping tools and dvd authoring tools first.

You can post user comments. I will try to split up the sections a bit more, work on the layout and fix the search.

most tools added, the descriptptions are not done yet though
    www.dvdrhelp.com/toolsnew

do you want all tools on one page or should I have each section on separate pages???

and should I list tools twice or more? like tmpgenc can both encode and cut so it should be under encoders and editors. it is easiest to only list them once...but then maybe someone will miss the tool.

Go ahead and list them twice or more.

And don't forget the PLUS version of TMPGenc. Last I checked, you didn't have that, and I'd honestly call that a different program that the regular TMPGenc. Not sure how you want to handle that one. When listing programs twice though, one mention of TMPGENC is enough. Maybe just add the TMPGENC PLUS description as TMPGENC with MPEG2 encoding and cache support, and only have it in the Encoder area.

I appreciate you don't want it to get too complex but how about expanding the rating?
From perhaps just one box, of a score of 1 to 10 how about...
    1) Ease of use (score 1 to 10)
    2) Functionality (score 1 to 10)
    3) Overall score (score 1 to 10)
For example, I find Ulead Movie Factory and absolute ease to use, but it's limited in it's capabilities.
I have no idea how you manage your board as far as compiling these scores but maybe you could then take an average for each rating.
    Just a thought

Personally I would prefer one page with subheadings on, ie. rippers, encoders etc. and then a page per series of tools, rather than all one one page.
This would then mean you would need to add tools such as TMPGEnc a couple of times, ie. within encoders and editors.

It is very easy to add. So are these ratings good:

    Ease of use
    Functionality
    Overall score

Maybe some more?? or maybe not...gets too complex.
