  1. I am using ULead Moviefactory to create DVD's. When i add an MPEG 2 clip, of file size 6.71MB, it counts it as 23MB!!! The video specs are:

    MPEG2
    720x576 @ 25FPS
    160/48 Audio
    25.6 Seconds in length

So why does the file size more than triple?? It comes out to almost 1MB per second
It means i can barely fit more video than i could on a VCD.???

Am i doing something wrong here???

  2. MF2 may be set up to use uncompressed PCM audio. There should be an option somewher to use mp2 audio. Find that and select it, then you should be OK.

  3. thanks for the reply.

however, mf2 doesnt seem to have any setting for audio. the file i input has mp2 160/48 audio. this can't really be changed in mf2, not with any setting i can see.

also, pcm audio 48000, is approximately 11MB per minute. This clip is 25 seconds, so approximately 4MB of PCM audio. Along with the 6MB video, this is only 10MB. It doesnt account for an EXTRA 13MB. Even with PCM audio, it shouldnt be 23MB from 6MB.

  4. OK when i encode with NO AUDIO at all, here are my results

    file size 6.7MB resolution 352x288 = Changed from 6.7 to 9MB
    file size 6.7MB resolution 480x576 = Changed from 6.7 to 23MB
    file size 6.7MB resolution 720x576 = Changed from 6.7 to 24MB

This is with NO AUDIO whatsoever. Why on earth is the file size almost quadrupling when i use a resolution anything bigger than a crappy standard VCD

are these the specs of the original file, or are these the specs after conversion?

  6. In Light of your further information it looks like it is re-encoding your video. It may be mpeg-2 but are you sure it is DVD compliant!

  7. I don't have MF2 running in front of me here at work, however MF2 does have a choice of LPCM and Mpg audio. If you look at the bottom of the screen where the two items in the bottom left corner are, the 2nd from the right is where you click to bring up the settings for the DVD you are creating.

Then in that settings the right hand top tab lets you choos LPCM or MPG audio.

    Hope this helps.
    Cheers

I had same problems. I was importing compiant DVD vobs and the file size was getting larger....not quadrupling but for 4.37GB went to I think close to 7GB. I changed the audio the MPEG. No difference. MF2 is doing something but not sure what......it imports it too quick to be re-encoding.
Please post if you find anything.

  9. Yeh it is not re-encoding. Ok here are ALL the specific details.

    Original file format: div3
    Original file resolution: 640x272

ok i am re-encoding it to 704x480 in order for it to be DVD compliant.

As far as i know it is DVD compiant, in that i can add it to movie factory 2, and burn it to a DVD, and it will play perfectly on my player.

MF2 is NOT re-encoding the files, it adds them very quickly.

I can make DVD's fine using these video clips, the only problem is the file size is going through the roof!!!

I have also used Sonic DVDit and i don't think it has this problem of ballooning the file size, HOWEVER the menu creation in MovieFactory 2 is much better than DVDit, both programs have their drawbacks, making neither a perfect choice. Is it possible to create menu's like in MF2, and then use them in DVDit (ie: dvd type menu's where you can use the arrows on your dvd pad to select things, you can't create these menu's in DVDit, you can only do dodgy VCD style menu's).

  10. You can add many no dvd ready files to MF2, It'll just encode them...

If it goes to burning very quickly then I'd say no encoding but then it doesn't enlarge the file sizes for me.

I can add 352 x 240 by 48khz audio and the size reflects the original size...

I can add files converted using CE Basic or TmpGenc using the standardc DVD templates and the size stays the same... Your files must not be DVD ready as you believe... DVD ready with no encoding is a *.MPG that is a standard mpeg2 that matches the templates in MF2... My experience anyway, No codecs etc.

I haven't had file sizes increase like you have... In fact if I put in DV AVIs form the ADVC-100 then the avi to mpg encoding shrinks em. Try running something like Gspot or Mpegproperties or AVICodec and be sure what your files are.

    Good Luck

  11. thanks for everyones replies. i've figured out the problem now. i infact wasnt using dvd compiant files.

for me, when the files are not dvd compliant, mf2 increases their size by LOTS.

when they are dvd compliant, it doesnt increase their size.

my mistake was encoding in 704x480 instead of 720x480, mf2 doesnt recognise 704 as a dvd compliant stream.

got it all figured out now, and files are added as their actual size

I wonder why my vobs are not staying the same size then

I know they are DVD compliant because I can burn the files to DVD but I want to put a simple menu and would like to keep as vobs. Can the ac3 have anything to do with it??? My file increase is pretty substantial....from 4.4GB to almost 7GB.

The files were made from DVD2One......could it be that the video is anamorphic??
