Ok, this is what I want to do;
I want to copy larger movies ( LOTR, Harry Potter etc ) to one DVDR, I want to lose the end credits to help reduce the file size before transcoding, and I want to process with Instant copy. I usually use DVD2ONE, but am not happy with the quality of the larger movies, instant copy seems to do a much better job, just takes longer.
First problem; Losing the credits is sometimes easy using VOBEDIT, it depends where the vobs/credits split, but there must be an exact way to do it ( like in DVD SHRINK ), where you can select the exact frame to end the movie on. Is it possible to do this with DVD SHRINK but not process the movie? or is there another program that can do this?.
Second problem, I can't seem to get Instant copy to produce a full DVDR when doing a movie only conversion. It produces a playable dvdr, but the movie ends about 10 minutes early.
Anyway, I have tried various methods using ifoedit, vobedit, dvd toolbox etc, basically I seem to have confused myself, and dug myself into a hole.
Can someone please guide me through the process?
Just to recap, I want movie only, with end credits removed ( down to an exact frame if possible ), and I want to transcode with Instant copy. I haven't seem a guide on how to do this, Maybe someone could put one together?
Thanks in advance
Kevlar

I would do that with DVDshrink and what I didn't want I just have it compress that as a still picture. Don't know how to do the same with IC sorry.

use this guide to chop the movie only using DVDShrink
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/
and use this guide to use IC
http://www.mrbass.org/instantcopy/
try this sizing guide, tho I doubt it will work with DVDShrink cropped movies
http://www.deano.dsl.pipex.com/backup/prediction.htm
but also note that when you do use IC with a movie that has had the end credits chopped then it may confuse IC regarding the original size and you could end up having any size movie cos of this
it's much easier to strip out the main movie using DVDToolbox and then use IC to reduce it, end credits included, cos it does a good job compressing them. Pearl harbour with 10 mins of end credits is only 380MB and compressed to say 60% goes down 250MB (if not less cos of black content) and that's 10 mins worth!
even using IC on the 3 hours of Pearl Harbour including the end credits gives good quality but the choice is yours -
right sussed it
strip the movie using DVDToolbox
process it with IC but oversize the movie even more to compensate for the inclusion of the end credits
so for Pearl Harbour I know the end credits would roughly be 0.2Gb, so I want a final size of 4.57Gb (4.37Gb+0.2Gb)
then process it cos IC will work better with the full movie and produce a working movie
THEN use DVDShrink to chop the end credits off to make it less than 4.37Gb
sorted 8)
this method will work better than the other cos DVDShrink causes problems for IC when it chops the end off -
Thanks for the help guys, this forum is so friendly
I'll give it a try.

takes a minute to work out but 5 to type it(it's upto you if it's worth the effort)
ie.
complete movie inc audio/endcredits 6Gb
audio 0.5GB
end credits 0.4Gb
movie only is 5.1Gb minus audio/end credits
4.37Gb minus audio 0.5Gb is 3.87Gb
so 5.1Gb needs to fit into 3.87Gb or use a rate of 75.88%
so 0.4Gb of end credits reduced to 75.88% will give 0.3Gb
so add this to the 4.37 and you need to aim for 4.67GB as a final size
but cos IC undersizes you will again have to compensate for that, so you may end up setting it to 4.83GB for a 1.85:1 movie . a 4:3 movie will be less at around 4.70Gb
be careful with 2.35:1 movies tho when you do use IC cos they undersize greatly and it's best just to use DVDShrink in the first place
for longer 2.35:1 movies greater than say 2hr 30mins it's not so bad if you use IC but any shorter and it will undersize no matter what you set it too
just in case you didn't know the reason ishere -
Thanks for the extra info, MackemX, do you teach maths in your spare time?
.
I've just ripped and stripped HP, Shrink says the total size is 6.07g.
The Audio is .45g. End credits are .34g
So movie only, is 5.28g
4.37 - audio = 3.92g
5.28g to 3.92 = 74.24%
.34g credits compressed to 74.24% = .252g
so 4.37g + .252g = 4.62g
The movie is full screen 4:3.
I'm lost from now on, can't work out how to use the predictor.
More help please
cheers MackemX,

o.k., I couldn't quite work out the predicter, I needed an output of 4.62, I set it to 4.79, it came out as 4.5, 250 MB will be trimmed off as credits, so I could have set it a bit higher as it undersized by 290MB.
Anyway, here's my question, the output from IC is .pdi files, I want to go through DVD Shrink, but shrink doesn't want .pdi, it wants .ifo. How do I get from .pdi to .ifo? I know there is a program to go from .pdi to .iso, but what about .pdi to .ifo ?.
thanks in advance

Actually, the disc says ' Full Frame ' on it, so I thought it was 4:3, but checking the back of the box it says ' regular' and 1.33:1.
The SN no. is Do22658.
I've just re-transcoded it, the first time I set it to 4.79, and it came out as 4.5, 290 MB different, so this time I set it to 4.91, it came out as 4.65, very close but just too big, even after trimming the start and end of the movie in Shrink, it was 30MB too big. DOH!
3rd time lucky I suppose!, it's no real hardship as I have been in work/bed each time.
I'd still like to know how to use the predicter though!
thanks for the help
What was that about reg settings?

The number I quoted is the number above the barcode. Which number do you want?
cheers

My settings are as follows;
15%
2%
1005MB.
These are ther recommended settings with the utility I used ( Hidden settings editor )
Can't seem to get anything from that URL.
I have sucessfully converted and written HP now, after my 3rd attempt at getting the size right. Very happy with the results.
Doing LOTR now.
I could still use a little help with the predictor tho!
cheers for the help
Kevlar
Edit, I must have altered the third setting myself. What settings do you use?
