Hi Guys,
I took following steps to get DVD-9 movie backed up on DVD-5 but the quality was pretty bad and it's all pixely.
The steps I took;
Ripped a DVD-9 using Decrypter.
Separated the video and audio by DVD2AVI.
Recoded the video using TMPG Plus, used PAL settings. Do I need to worry about these setting much?
Extracted the chapter points using ChapterXtractor.
Combine everything using DVD Maestro.
And finaly burned the DVD using Gear Pro V6
So what area I need to look at further to enhance the quality, if TMPG settings than what settings should I put it, help please?

Just rip the whole thing using DVD Decrypter, then Use instacopy to burn, takes about 5 hours total and you have a complete backup including menus, special features etc... I don't know why everyone dicks around will all these other methods. I use less than 10 mouse clicks and it's done.

JSNKC - that's because it's not about the numbe of steps or the time, but the quaility of the end result. All the transcoders produce pretty poor quaility, IMHO. IC does actually re-encode (which is why it takes so much longer than the other programs) but it's quaility is also only so-so to good.
Re-encoding with CCE or TMPGenc normally gives the best quaility, even thou it takes more steps, needs more programs, and often takes longer.
Kukabara - PAL vs. NTSC does matter! What settings did you use in TMPGenc (resolution, bitrate, etc). What was the size of your final encoded m2v file? What's the run time of your source? Do you need/want to keep it anamorphic, if not resizing to 352x480 will help a LOT (but then it's locked at 4:3 letterboxed). -
The best way and quality that I've found out is:
Decode with DVD Decrypter
Use DVD2ONE to make it fit on one DVD-5 disk
Convert the VS_Video file to an image file using ImgTools
Then burn with RecordNow Max 4.5
You don't get all the menus and special features, but only the movie. But it has the best picture quality for the movie (And that's what counts). I would like to find a way to include JUST the scene selection menu, but I haven't figured a way to do that yet. If anyone knows, let me know. -
Vejita-sama, I used following settings in TMPGenc, I used the Constant Bitrate, PAL 16:9, don’t know the size of m2v and source’s runtime as I am at work at the moment but I’ve got 900 Athlon so it took about 9 hours to code. In MPEG Setting > GOP Structure I used IPB/142 for PAL and for Output interval of Sequence header I chose 1. Also checked Force Picture Type Setting ………… does it help at all??

I've had great quality with all the DVD's I have burned, you will soon find that most of the "hollywood" dvd's use a much higher bitrate than they need to simply because they can. Normally you can cut the bitrate of the movie in half and not get any really noticable quality loss. Using the method I use will still give you a great quality DVD with everything intact, and it won't take you 2 days to do it. If you're gonna waste more than 5 hours on copying a DVD you should just buy it cause it's not worth it to waste all that time. And the more programs you run it through, the more quality loss you will get, that is why the simplest methods are always the best.

Hi Guys,
Following is the link to the guide I'm using to back up my DVD-9, which I already own to DVD-5, thought I'd mention that for the records
http://www.digital-forums.com/dvd2dvdr/intro.htm now I re-coded the movie with TMPGen Plus and this time got improved quality but still not good so I tend to think it's maybe the TMPGen related settings issue I used these settings expect that I used PAL settings and in GOP Settings for "Output interval of Sequence header" I left the "0" also I unchecked the "Force Picture type setting" this is the link http://www.digital-forums.com/dvd2dvdr/part3.htm
Total movie length is 1 hr and 44 minutes and the m2v file was 776MB. So does anyone knows how I could increase the quality? any suggestions?

NM I just read the guide you showed and see that m2v is actually the video file left over from tmpgenc. If it is the video then you have the bitrate way to low 700mb for a dvd video is way to low.
I am not the greatest at this but isn't m2v an audio file? being 780 mb i would think so since a dvd-r can hold 5x that . Why not use besweet and encode that to ac3? Lose size but not quality. Then you will have some more head room to play with on the video quality. Most people i know use vbr settings though for movies because not all scenes need the same bitrate so why waste lots of bitrate on a scene with no detail when that extra bitrate left over can go into other scenes that need more bitrate. All retail dvd's are vbr for a reason. -
Hi Psychoace,
You may be right that my bitrate might be low. m2v is a video only file which is created by TPMGen, I use the DVD2AVI to create ac3 file for audio.
I'm ok with everything including DVD Maestro bits and the movie automatically starts playing when I put it in my standalone DVD player, the only problem I'm having now that it's pixely so it might be bitrate related but I did use VBR settings so I'm not sure how the heck I can increase the bitrate and would it increase the quality? any ideas?

you can increase bitrate or increase constant quality which i believe the link you provided earlier showed. Better quality for constant quality involves you going to settings right next to automatic vb and then raise the % number. Figure out the original size and if 70% would keep it around 4.1-4.2 gig then that is what you put as the quality (this involves math class). After that join your audio and you should be fine the m2v file should be near 4.2gig not anywhere near 700mb

Psychoace it makes perfect sense, I'm at work but when I get home I'll try this and see how we go, will post the results sometimes tomorow, thanks for all the help guys.

Hey Guys,
Just keeping you postedI increased the bitrate % in TMPGen to 90 within the CQ (constant quality) option and also set the video quality to Highest (here's the link for TMPGen settings http://www.digital-forums.com/dvd2dvdr/part3.htm). I haven't burned it yet but the size of m2v file is now 3.2GBs istead of 776MB previously. Looking good, let you know how it goes on the DVD.

Everything's working like a charm ....
Thanks for all the help.

Np now i have to do the same got some dv video i want to turn over into dvd. Wish me luck

Dont know why anyone wants to use anything else except Decrypter & DVD2one and Nero to burn done in about 1 hr. Now if someone could just come up with a way to convert avi so you could put them on DVd would be the best have tons of movie on tape want to record as avi then convert to put on DVD.
-
here is a easy reason. Maybe they want a quality replacement and not some pixilated junk you would most likly get with dvd2one since it reduces pixels and dosn't recode the video stream. For ultimate quality this is the best way tmpeg or cce.
Also i belive you can make a avi 2 dvd with dvd2svcd just use a avi as source and make sure all the settings are dvd compliant and you should be able to get a dvd output -
Flaw in encoding settings = poor quality output. Adjust as necessary to PAL, if you do not have or want to upgrade to CCE.

I guess everyone has their own opinions on this type of thing, but I'm surely happy with DVD2ONE. -
Once you use DVDSHRINK, you will not use anything else.
In order to keep the menus and extras without lower picture quality, I first burn the movie only on first dvd
And on the second disk, I jump directly to re-encode and tell it to
make a slideshow out of main movie, which I will never play because I have the movie on the first DVD.
This give me all the menus and extras.
I have found this to be the quickest way. And uses less HD space, since you don't have to rip first. -
I have tried to use DVDShrink, but for some reason my DVDs don't work on my standalone player when I use it. I'm not sure why, but it doesn't.

Hummmm ...... guys I've got an interesting problem which I'm not sure anyone has any experienced with or not but what the hell here we go .... well since I installed my Pioneer A05 DVD burner last weekend was the first time I tried to burn an audio CD-R with my Creative CD burner which was already installed. I tried to use the Easy CD Creator 6 but didn't work so while keeping the 6 I installed version 5 and end up burning the CD-R.
Now the problem is that while I can see all the tracks and their playing time there's no sound. I played it with both the computer and the normal CD player but the same results, counter goes on, you can forward to tracks but no sound !!! ............. anyone?? any ideas??

hi guys
i must agree with orbital517 because i also believe that DVD2ONE is just about the best complete DVDbackup program i have used...and i can tell you i've used many!!!..lol
Occassionally with black backgrounds you can see very slight movement if your really critical. If you want ALL the film and extras then DVD2ONE 1.1.3 is your man.Use DVD Decrypter to pull of all the files/then choose edit select all to choose all your files in file mode not ISO. send them all to a VIDEO_TS folder use DVD2ONE then burn using prassi Primo DVD.As long as the film is about 4 to 6gb and the extras are no more than 1gb or the total is no more than 7gb big then this is the method to use.If larger use Pinnacle Instant Copy and if less than 4.5gb big try DVDxCopy 1.5.
I use all these programs with excellent results.
