your dvd player is not a "dvd-r" - its dvd player.
info here : https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid=476&Search=Search&#comments
it says it will play both dvd-r and dvd+r disks -
Correct, try different media, or try a different burn process. There is some reason other then + media why its not playing.

Whatever tools you are using, just make an ISO file & burn with Nero while checking the DVD-ROM booktype under the burn tab. This works everytime.

I would recommend for you to check out +RW media instead of +R. I have a Sony NS700P standalone DVD player and it does not read +R media, but It reads +RW media perfectly.
