i need help please!

i d/l a clip and its in .avi form.well evertytime i goto convert it it says can not open or unsupported.how can i can this to work so i can convert it to mpeg.also i can paly the movie.help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok i was gonna try to use virtuladub and create another avi file but when i went to open the file it had this mesage
couldn't locate decompressor for format "mp42"(microsoft high speed mpeg-4 v2).
so do i need to a another codecs?any help please

You do have divx codec installed??
