I have a nice Xvid that sounds like its audio is 5.1 surround sound and I want to know how to handle it when i try to encode it to DVD. I have two questions.
    1. How can i tell if its has AC3 5.1 compression
    2. How should I handle the sound when encoding so that i don't lose the 5.1 surround sound feature.

    Thanks in advance,

  4. Most of the Time AC3 is 5.1. There is Stereo AC3, but if its a rip, there would be no point in keeping the AC3 if it was stereo. If the AC3 was stereo, it would be better to convert to MP3.

  6. No MP3 isn't DVD complient. If your rip is AC3, then just demux it. Encode the video with DVD Standards. And mux the AC3 with the MPEG-2 Video.

The reason I brought up the MP3, I was saying that the ripper would have better luck with MP3 if the original AC3 was stereo. So if you download a movie and its AC3 it will almost never be stereo, because the ripper would change that to MP3 to save space. The only reason to keep the AC3 is because its 5.1.

Check the avi with GSpot to see if it is in fact AC3.

If you can't hear the AC3 then get the AC3 codec, either from the Tools section of this site or do web search.

    AC3 is DVD compliant.

If you're making an SVCD from an avi with AC3 audio, then it's best to extract the audio to a wav file first and use the wav file as the audio source for the encoder. I use Goldwave, here's a guide.
