I went out and bought a PACIFIC DIGITAL 16X DVD-ROM today and took out my old one (factory installed) and realized that it was the exact same one, only difference is that the old one was manufactored in 2001 and the new one was 2002. So my question is " Is there some kind of setting that has to be changed to make my factory installed DVD-ROM read at a higher speed. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks.

  2. enable dma on that bizzatch.

i've got the same drive as you do, and the fastest speed i've ever got off it on a dual layer disc was about 8.5x

  3. Go to Device Manager>Hard Disk Controllers and remove all>reboot, this will cause the OS to re-detect and reset to DMA.
This is a common problem with XP Home.

Do you mean the Drives or the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers?

Do you think that if I installed the new one that it might read at a faster speed because if not I will return it and order a Lite On for my "in the making" computer.

SLICK RICK: He means the conrollers. I'll also state that personally my Liteon has been awsome for DVD ripping, very fast.

Well, I did it and it worked like a charm. Tested it on Lord Of The Rings and it started off at 5x instead of the usual 1x. Thanks.

Just a quick update, I just finished ripping a DVD (main files only) and it got up to speeds of about 12x and finished in about 6 min instead of the usual 50+ min.

    THANKS EVERYONE,
