For whoever said about worthless obscure crap..

I've seen far more "worthless" (to my mind anyway, may be modern classics but never heard of them and they look low rate) things coming out on DVD than I know what to do with. Someone somewhere has come up with a cheap way of making, selling and marketing these things, much like the Time Warner 80-CD box sets of lots of 'timeless classics' that include absolutley nothing that got higher than number 10 in the charts.. somehow they manage to scrape together from mail order sales to pay for the meagre licensing fees those non-hits must produce..

And think of the music industry, so many artists that don't sell multi million albums, but they still have a small committed fanbase, sell just enough records to survive, and the company don't drop them.

Plus you never really know how much more popular something may become til you make, advertise, and sell it, and word gets around.

It's not a great BO take, but who would ever have thought Spirited Away could make $10 million in the states...

Some of these things are already selling well in other countries, so the material is there - just need to get a copy of the disc data (licensing probably the hardest and most expensive part), re-tag the english audio and subs to be the first stream, or add them if not present (a fair bit easier than adding video?), blow off any thoughts of extras (just like what happened in the 20-odd years of video BEFORE DVD), stick on the simplest of menus, press it onto a stack of cheap discs in spare production line time, similar with the cover and box, and slip a few into the delivery boxes for each store you try to sell them thru. Maybe tag a bit about them in your next press release and ad campaign. Doesn't have to be that expensive.

When it comes down to it, it would be a labour of love. Give me a 4x DVD writer ($399?), a stack of cheap but reliable blanks, and the sources of e.g. Cities in any half decent format (particularly mr t skutt's super fine mpg2s), and I'll happily sit here and dupli up however many copies you think will sell. Cost per unit, not counting licensing (argh... but then Studio Pierrot / DiC are now so strapped they'll probably consider any offer - had to drop a second series recently because of money issues), less than five dollars hopefully. Sell at eight-ninety-nine, or whatever price sort-of covers shipping and the like. Pay for advertising and any overspill out of own pocket. Don't aim to make a profit, just cover an aching gap in the market and maybe, one day, break even.

If there's one series that would sell to the nostalgic student contingent, before they all get too young to remember (the current buzz for old kids stuff by midlife crisisers is mainly late 70s/early 80s stuff like dangermouse, so there's still a gap for ulysses and cities, dogtanian, he-man etc), i'm pretty bloody sure it would be this one. Sold by the bucket in france.. and ages ages way back it even used to be for rent (and later sale?) in UK / US video stores, along with many other kids TV shows. Kids of the time probably would have bought it or got their parents to, if cash hadnt all gone on ninja turtles. So why discount the idea that they might buy them now?

    OK rant over

  6. @ BJ_M, thanks...although I don't have a Laser Disc Player, I do know someone that does. If it isn't converted to DVD in the near future, I have some options. Thanks

Interestingly, 2 of the other movies I was really hoping would be on DVD were Jaws 3, (mainly because it's the ONLY one NOT currently on DVD and would be nice to have the set) & "GOTCHA." I just checked the net and "GOTCHA" is gonna be coming out on DVD August 12th! Jaws will be out in another month or so. Now the only one left at this point would be Twilight Zone....I really hope it is put on DVD soon.

Oh, and of course, one movie I would really, really like to see on DVD is "COME FLY WITH ME." The Michael Jordan Biography...man...I remember when that first came out on VHS....talk about THE MAN! How can that NOT be on DVD? Hard to believe...someone better take care of that one.

Be intersting. Wonder if Onionhead and No time for Sargent's will be released also? Or the old Slavage one pilot movie?

  8. Just thought of some TV sitcoms I'd REALLY hope are converted to DVD.

    THREE'S COMPANY
JEFFERSONS-..researched it and they have the 1st season coming out in a week or so.

And a couple of old time HBO classics I'd really like to get my hands on would be "FRAGGLE ROCK" and the Old...Tales from the Crypt episodes. I know they have 1 DVD or so of the Tales from the Crypt...but they really need to put more of the episodes on DVD imho.

And finally, How could I not think of the classic comedy show
"IN LIVING COLOR" with Daemon Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Tommy Davison, James Carrey, and Jamie Foxx....how in the hell they don't have any or ALL of those epsisodes on DVD is beyond me. If I had to choose...I'd pick the "In Living Color" episodes overy ANY of the others.

Totally! So far the Tom Baker stories that have been issued are excellent quality. For that matter so are the pre Tom Baker stories. The best I have seen so far would be a tie between "The Robots of Death" (r1) and "The Ark in Space" (R2).

Actually, I don't watch that show. Unless i know that she will be revealing herself. That's not too often. It's just nice to have the collection around.

The reason for the crush is because i actually had a dream with her and without getting into all the details, it was the best dream i ever had. As a matter of fact it was the only dream i've ever had of someone famous like that. That's about all i can do is dream.

Incidentally... I cant remember whether I saw many Hitchcocks in this thread (maybe none, maybe loads ) but what certainly stood out in the local music/vid store last time I stoney-broke browsed through was a large slew of them in the new releases section. So that's pretty cool if you're a fan of the old fat controller impersonator...
