First...BJ_M, how do you watch the original aspect ratio of 2001 ASO, on three TVs? As I recall, the original was in Cinerama! Yes, I saw it in the theater.

Anyway, here's my list alphabetically (and I resist the temptation to break the rules and list my top 50!):

Apocalypse Now - The only war movie that approaches the actual absurdity of war. (Yes, I did serve in the 1st ID in Vietnam 67-68. 1st ID motto: "No mission too difficult. No sacrifice too great. Duty first." Yeah, right!)
    Casablanca
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Das Boot (The subtitled version is best, if you can find it.)
Day the Earth Stood Still (You gotta see the REALLY scary interview with the producer!)
Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
In the Heat of the Night (The movie. Any similarity to the TV show is purely in the name.)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) Not only a classic Sci-Fi, but also a virtual course in cinematography.
    It's a Wonderful Life
    The Last Picture Show

  2. I noticed "PULP FICTION" on several lists. Great movie, if you liked that you'll like a sleeper called "FORMULA 51".

it was shot in Super Panavision 70 and shown in some theatres as a modified Super-Cinerama 2.6:1 ratio (well in that area anyway) , Cinerama was orig. a three camera system , but not for 2001.

2001 was released in many formats - non 2 the same (even a sphere version).

i display this with a high def video server stored images squeezed to 16:9 ratio and displayed with a video projector that uses an anamorphic lens (and edge blanking to bring it back on the screen properly masked).

    Re: Song of the South

I don't get it about how people say how rare this film is.

If anyone wants to see it but can't stump up the $230 in order to import a UK copy, just give me a shout, I'll happily send you one for sixty. The local supermarkets Disney tape sections (raa, still no miyazaki/other diz-distro'd titles displayed on them) are overflowing with the bloody things.

Heck if I get twenty orders I'll drop it to fifty.

Could do with an extra bit of cash, five hundred pounds (1000 dollars minus tapes and postage) would do nicely.

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!

Thanks for the reminder--even though I am not an Aussie--about this gem by the Sitch/Kennedy/Cilauro/Gleisner team. Another often overlooked film from director Rob Sitch is The Dish, with Sam Neill. Sitch and his associates have an uncanny ability to create characters that you actually care about, while not running through their entire four-letter vocabulary six times in the first reel!

And these favorites are often available for under $15 (US) on DVD. I haven't seen The Castle in a while. Just need to decide whether to put in in my Netflix queue or just go buy it!

That movie still rates as one of the best Australian movies of all time. Good chance to see Eric Bana before he made it famous (overseas anyway) with Black Hawk Down/The Hulk.

Anything actually from the Working Dog group is good actually. The Panel is a great TV show, The Dish was also a great Australian movie and Frontline was by far the best spoof ever done of the news/current affairs genre.

P.S Almost forget to mention, Russel Coight All Aussie Adventures, hilarious

There is a movie very hard to get: "Sliver". The Sharon Stone film based in a New York apartment.

It is only available in VHS tape. Did anyone seen a copy of the DVD anywhere in America or anywhere on this planet?
