Hmm, pretty wide tastes coming through, but I am surpised how many times that pure clasics have been mentioned like T2 or Alien or Godfather. These are movies that people went to multiple times at the theatre so i can see people watching them regularly. I cant help but think lots of the other choices which are not so mainstream are one time renters at best but each to his own.

Someone's gonna whup my ass for this, but I have to throw in Princess Mononoke.. Most the other films on this list are far too classic for it to be on top of them, but it can at least join from the side
Just skipping thru it again after getting hold of a subtitled copy of it (one day.. soon.. when the bestbuy buy-3-get-1-free offer comes round to the UK.. i'll have the real DVD..) and realised just how good it still is. I'd take it over Akira even, which was pretty, but too much of a cut-short travesty to be totally lovable.

Might not have made that admission had I not added up all my TV show vids the other day and found it was a 50:10 (Gb) ratio in favour of animated stuff to live.. and here's me trying not to be otaku.. Not sure on the movie count yet but hopefully that will redress the balance..

Now to work on the other 9... aagh. Top 10 lists, just too hard to do. Need to make it a top 100... no, that's cliche as well. A "Top 365, in no particular order". Then you can take the list, go down the rental store (or hit the net) and take whichever is the first one you find that's not yet been crossed off. Guaranteed a good film every night of the year then... who needs bars

(busily studying the rest of the thread for ideas on what to watch next..)
-= She sez there's ants in the carpet, dirty little monsters! =-
Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!

  7. Here are 10 of my favorite movies:

    Uncorked
    The World Of Henry Orient
    Photographing Fairies
    The Man in the Moon
    Wild Things
    The Virgin Suicides
    Dick
    Heavenly Creatures
    Plan 9 From Outer Space
    To Kill A Mockingbird

I'm sure most people will only know 3 or four of these...

good question (but impossable to keep at 10)- i guess:

    first 10

Blade Runner (directors cut instead of the crappy commercial version) (i have on High definition transfered from laserdisk with DTS only)

    2001 A Space Odyssey
... (in the correct aspect ratio from the 70mm print - hahaha (i have it on high definition! right from the print) )

    Apocalypse Now

    Alien directors cut

Lord Of The Rings Trilogy (special edition directors cut - 6 disk box set due out in 2005 or 6)

Animal House + Blues Bros. (put them both on the same disk - classic and best watched together)

Jurasic Park 1 - on the DTS only special laser disk , still awesome and best sound - i still use to demo the studio (the chapter up to and including the goat falling on the car roof - still makes people jump).

Deer Hunter - yep i see it on a lot of lists here.

JAWS - yes it was so well done .

    second 10

The Fifth Element - still one of the best for picture quality on dvd ..

    Citizen Kane - still haunting

It's a Wonderful Life - still puts a lump in my throat after seeing 20 some times , not many movies can do that to you ..

Clockwork Orange -- i think we are living it now (best to read some Doris Lessing and/or Aldous Huxley first , then watch it, follow that up with some Kurt Vonnegut, ok i am still stuck in that era and 1984 is in the future (or is it?))..

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio, Bambi and Sleeping Beauty
THE best samples of animation done the "old" way (cell animation) and still a classic tales with songs that are part of you forever (SW best example of this).
Bambi i include here - but it is not a kids movie i have the very rare Special edition re-mastered Laser Disk version of this.
Sleepy Beauty was orig. a very sexual folk story (guess how she was awoken) , Anne Rice played off the orig. story in her series of adult stories : "The Taming of Sleeping Beauty" .. Disney really cleaned that story line up for the kiddies..

Song of the South (1946) - sadly this excellent movie will not be ever restored as it was super good looking color when released. The remaining prints are very washed out and in bad bad shape ..
I put it seperate from the other disney movies as it is live and animation together (and you thought roger rabbit was a new idea)
I have the laser disk of this (from Japan - this movie will never be released in the USA - ever ) which was made from a positive print - which still was in pretty bad shape (a lot of people think movie was B&W plus color animation portion - which is not the case). When i get the time i am going to capture the laser disk and color correct it and redo the audio (right now - bad mono tracks , Jap on left , english on right) - i would like to remove the subtitles off the songs also as those were added for the japan market, but pretty difficult.
For a movie so many have never seen - it has a amaizing loyal fan base , it is ranked as:
Song of the South as Favorite Animated Movie. Currently #1. (Next 100 yrs of Magic.)
or Song of the South as Favorite Musical. Currently #2. (Next 100 yrs of Magic.)
Song of the South as Favorite Movie of the 1930's/40's. Ranked #7 (100 years of Magic); Currently #1. (Next 100 yrs of Magic.)!
Brer Rabbit as Favorite Classic Animated Character. Currently #1!
but Disney will not even admit the movie is thiers or exists!!!
help kick them in the butt - see http://www.uncleremuspages.com/sosp.html

the 10th choice -- i guess "Once Upon a Time in America (1984)"

though there are SO MANY more great movies that you can watch over and over ..

    The Last Temptation of Christ
    Raging Bull
    The Last Waltz
    all from Martin Scorsese

    Lolita (1962)
    Full Metal Jacket
    The Shining
    all great Kubrick classics

    12 Angry Men (1957) - one word = intense

Then the Hitchcock masterpieces such as:
    The Birds
    Psycho
    Vertigo
    North by Northwest
    Rear Window

    Pulp Fiction
    The Red Violin
    The Piano
    The Pianist
    Das Boot
    Dogma

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
and the whole Faulty Towers series

    more movies such as
    American Beauty
    Unbearable Lightness of Being
    Léon (see the uncut version)
    Bad Lieutenant
Reservoir Dogs (great one - maybe should be higher in my list)
    Taxi Driver
Labyrinth (under rated but great movie for kids)
The Hunger - i really like this movie , but the Tv version is only good if you want to watch softcore porn (kinda like anything from Zalman King)
The Godfather Series - though I'm not as wild about it as some.
The English Patient (great sound track and visuals)
    Silence of the Lambs
    Bridge on the River Kwai
Metropolis (just because it was made even)
    Young Frankenstein
    The Hustler (1961 version)
    Die Hard (started a trend)
Brazil (how can this not be on anyones list?)
    Streetcar Named Desire
Ultimo tango a Parigi (Last Tango in Paris, but uncut version)
The Exorcist - its still good
The Day the Earth Stood Still - there was a msg there but most didnt get it that Klaatu was acually christ
    Dog Day Afternoon
    Twelve Monkeys
    Midnight Cowboy
    MASH
    Fantasia
The Iron Giant - great flick
Being There - sellers at his best
Planet of the Apes (1968+) series (the Orig.) better than the remake by far and so well done.
    The Killing Fields
Can't remeber the name of it - but the movie where the earth (all life) is being destroyed by an atomic cloud after a nuke war and a crew pushs off from australia in a sub .. saw it long ago and still is haunting.

    and many many more ...

just a note -- when i heard J. Lopez is going to do a remake of Casablanca - i was going to heave

On The Beach! (I remember the drunks in Australia singing waltzing Matilda, Fred Astaire driving the race car and San Francisco completely deserted.)

This is a great movie in glorious color and sound, now almost impossible to get. I got a copy of this film on a Beta tape recorded from TV about 15-16 years ago. The TV system is PAL.

The tape is in excellent condition, I now will have to transfer to VHS soon as the Beta is getting too old and broken.

if its on beta - should be pretty great quality , i would transfer it to Digital BetaCam through a snell and wilcox Archangel system and restore it through the da Vinci color wise and composite it on shake (hint , hint) , comparing it to the laser disk version and re-assemble and match parts exactly ..

The UK version (the pal version on VHS and used to be on laser disk) is missing about 4 minutes of the film (no one seems to know why) ..
The japan laser disk version has the whole thing .
The UK Pal VHS tapes are being sold for $230 US now i see (very rare and limited copies as disney will not permit more to be made)..

The laser disks can be bought herehttp://www.stores.ebay.com/discsofjapan/plistings/list/all/dept0/index.html

he has some really great laser disks for sale btw

Wasn't the movie pulled by Disney because of a racial scene ? That is probably the missing scene

no - those are not the scenes (the whole movie could be considered racial) - but then again "gone with the wind" was also.

The scenes missing are just parts of the movie - one of the missing sections is a boy crying on the side of the road.

Yes, I remember that part of "Song of the South" videotape.

I will have another view of this videotape as I don't remember whether the videotape got commercials on them or not. If so, I will have edit the unwanted advertising.

  22. There are way too many to list, but I agree with several of the lists such as Phantasm, Scanners, and other "B" classics. Matrix, Aliens and Monty Python movies are good and obvious choices.

I'll add "Assault on Precinct 13" and "Wizards" to these lists as well.

yea == the westerns , i remember many a good time at the drive in watching those Terence Hill& Bud Spencer Movies (the trinity series) (" My Name Is Trinity" and "My name is Nobody" are the best of those) .

of course who was watching the screen - but you went often enough to pick up most of the movie when you were not seeing double or the door handles or both of the above, at least when you could see through the smoke .. ..... 8)
