How much better quality VCDs(for my brother) and SVCDs(for me) would I get converting DVDs step by step with the various programs available as opposed to using these all-in-one type programs? These two seem to work well for me (I'm using CCE 2.5 with DVD2SVCD) but I still wonder whether the extra work of a step by step manual conversion is worth the trouble. Thanks.

DVD2SVCD uses the same programs you would step by step, just runs them for you. I normally edit the AVISynth file prior to running CCE to fix it 'the way I like it.'
Basically DVD2SVCD is easier. What mostly effects quaility is the settings used in the encoder. If the settings are the same quaility will be the same. -
dvd2svcd is a bunch of programs controlled by dvd2svcd. I find programs like dvdx which is an all in one produces poor results compared to separate programs. I use smartripper with dvd2avi and tmpgenc to make svcd's and vcd's. I also use dvd2svcd with CCE and it produces same results but at twice the speed. Now, the only reason I still use the slower way is that I do not have a widescreen tv and I like to take widescreen dvd and convert them to amaphoric or amaphoric to full screen without stretching the picture. Dvd2svcd and cce does not have that option. see what i mean at http://entiendo.gotnet.net/

Still can't beat the ol' human tweaking, the all in one solutions are quick and easy but are no match for what you can do yourself..

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!
