premiere and vegas "capture" of dv is exactly the same - DV is transfered - not captured ..
only when it is re-rendered does the dv codec used come into play (canopus and Sonic foundry are the best)
you could just frame serve from vegas to tmpgenc if you want to use tmpgenc to save time and extra compression..

I would agree with you EXCEPT that I have found sonic foundy(both vegas and video factory) were capturing a SHADE darker (slight) than the original. I did not find this to be true with ADOBE premier which is why I switched. Do you know what might be causing the shading ?
Also , sonic foundry may be good, but they are LOUSY in comparison to TMPGenc for motion. When I use TMPG to go from DV AVI to mpeg 2, PERFECTION.
The mpeg 2 in Vegas has motion effects and is nowhere near as clear.
Trust me, I would not use an extra tool if I did not have to...It wastes time.
Thanks in advance.... -

Well to get BACK on topic(media, et al) ..I just got word my MEDIA printer shipped so it is no longer backordered. As I will be out of town next week (sigh) I wont get to test it....
But when I do I plan on testing a variety of disks INCLUDING non printable, just to see...Might get a smear ? -
I suspect you'll get an inky mess, I wouldn't suggest usingit on non printable disk.
-
I think I will take your advice !!! Anyone know where to get the 'fixer' spray that will seal the ink ??? How does IT affect media ?

if you print on non printable dvds or cds -- it would be a mess for sure .. -

Unfortunately, when I got it last year, it cost $1400US. (I'm a little jealous about the cost slide with the Epson). Just about made my money back from it though. That and the color ink costs $57 each from the manufacturer. That'll cover ~120 discs with Med/High rez.
Hey, does anybody know of an ink that is compatible with this model that I can use instead of the manufacturer? Would love to save on ink costs...

I bought several Epson compatable cartrages from them recently. Breif testing showed very little difference in color quality and no smearing.
Have to test more though.I don't have a bad attitude...

I've printed a few disc on my 900 printer and have noticed a problem on most of them. At the bottom of the disc approx 3/8" across the disc prints a "little" lighter. This is not very noticable but is definately lighter. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed a problem? It could be my cd tray as they are light and a little flexible.
On the other hand I am quite happy with the quality and the way the disc look. They do print out a little light in the cd/dvd mode but still look good. I'm using the ritek inkjet media.
Thanks, Jerry -
Anyone have these printers in stock yet?

The disc goes into the drive, you print the one area, then you remove the disc, rotate it 180 degrees by hand, and then using a plastic calibrator overlay, make sure the disc is square when you reinsert it. Then you print the other area of the disc. You don't HAVE to print top and bottom, you can print just top OR bottom if you want.
Overall you can print about 3" worth of data in the print zone. (up to 3/4" in height) It can be text or graphics, but graphics is only 200DPI. The ribbons don't print that much since they are very small. (the ribbon cartridge is only 2" x 1" x 3/4") So you get 50 single prints, or 25 full top and bottom prints. It uses the same amount of ribbon regardless of how much information is bring printed. It connects via USB and a power cord.
The downside is that it uses propritary ribbons, so you can't pick them up at your local Staples. So far I've had to order them from the place I bought the printer from. (they have four colors - black, blue, red and silver) I would expect they will work their way around to the office places once the printer becomes more available. I bought a pack of 10 ribbons for US$79 which includes shipping. That will get me 500 single prints or 250 double prints. (so about 15 cents for a single print or 30 cents for a double print)
The quality suits my needs, and it prints using any TrueType font installed on my system. It's not fancy, but I decided to go with with this since I really didn't want to get into ink based printing.
In the end it's a basic printer that you can use to print on pretty well ANY media. Even if the media has printing on it you can print on top of that. (although quality will depend on what is below) No special 'printable' media is needed, and the printing DOES look good on a plain silver face (if you use a black, blue or red ribbon) No worry about dry time or ink running. I only had one disc out of 50 that had a 'poor' print. (a smal area didn't 'catch'. It could have been a fingerprint on the disc, can't say for sure.)
Anyway, that should give you an idea of what to expect. For a hundred bucks don't expect miracles from it, but it is a handy little printer.

Does anyone know a place that sells either the Epson 900 or 960 in Australia?
I checked the Epson Australia website and they don't have them listed (maybe a different model number used?) so I guess that Epson doesn't sell them in Australia themselves.
Any Ideas? I would prefer to try and buy locally instead of some overseas internet retailer. -
Do thermal/inkjet printers print on all discs or just printable ones? How do I know if I have a printable disc? I have a spindle of Ritek DVD's that are clear on top and you can see the silver material through the top layer.

J&R Music & Computer World has the Stylus Photo 900 in stock for $199.88. I received mine yesterday. The first disc I printed is a little light, but the actual print quality is good. I will try a darker print setting on future disc's.

Arcorob,
Just wondering how your new printer was doing?
Care to share any printing results with us?
Are you having any problems mentioned in previous
posts like light printing or horizontal lines?
