  1. Hi, I have a JVC dvl157 Dv camcorder, which has no analogue input but will accept DV-in to record to tape.
I also have an ATI rage capture card.
question is, is it possible to connect an analogue source into my ATI card & pass it through the firewire direct to the camcorder on the fly, using my PC as a passthrough for the analogue source & letting the camcorder do the analogue to DV conversion ?

    cheers !

I have no idea if this is possible. However, even if it was, your camcorder wouldn't do the conversion but your pc.

I know there's a software that let's you record whatever you want to on a DV tape (for example PC backups). You can capture your analog source with your ATI card using a DV codec and the transfer that to tape afterwards (although I have no idea if that DV avi will be playable on your camcorder).

  3. Daznic,
The short answer is NO. Digital camcorder ONLY accept DV format as an input through firewire. As the other poster indicated your computer should do the conversion from whatever format you capture to DV. I do not know of any software to do that on the fly, but if you are willing to capture your analog source into your hard drive first (let's say MPEG-2 format), then there is a software that would accept taht file as an input and would convert it to DV format on the fly and send it to your mini DV. You can watch and record the the video on your camcorder(Originally this software was designed to connect your computer to your TV via a digital camcorder for the video cards which do not suport TV out). I hope this would help.

  4. Thanks for your replies, i realised after my posting that of course the camcorder will only take already converted DV in, maybe i`ll have to save up for a hardware analogue-dv converter instead ?

    Thanks again
