Camera is erasing itself !!!

I am capturing some stuff onto my computer from a sony camera, model CCD-TRV11E and after i have watched the footage through the playback mode i cannot go back to the footage i just watched, it wont rewind past where i stopped, it seems like it is erasing the tape as it goes. This only happened after the camera was leant to a friend, could a setting have been changed to make it do this or is it a serious problem???

Is there a "preview capture" as well as the normal capture ?, I have seen some software that lets you preview a little before you actually capture properly.

no, you misunderstand, the tape in the camera seems to be getting loveed up, the capture is fine but this seemed like the closest forum to what i need an answer for.

Oh its a cam corder, I would say that the electro magnet is being switched on when it should no be on. Is there a mode for simply erasing tapes without recording?.

Are any of the buttons stuck ?, has the camera got damp ? is the erase, a fixed magnet or an electro magnet, if fixed is it moved into the wrong position and stuck. (tape jam can cause this)
