  1. Hi all,

i was wondering if u guyz could help me out here. I am using DVDX 2.2 to convert a dvd to avi. Now i am following the guide from here......

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/steven.hawkins1/DVDx_guide/#divx

I do evrything that is asked to do from this site (except the SVCD encoding with TMPGec) for converting to avi.

The problem i have is when i convert a dvd, my output settings where the "volume don't exceed" i have 700 mb. So in other words i want an avi file not to exceed 700 mb. (SHEWW let me get my breath back)

Ok i have tried several times but when i convert the DVD ( in this case i't Monsters inc) i get about 5 files that are 700 mb. So basically the movie is about 3+gig long not exceeding 700mb as asked. The only problem is i want "1" file that has the whole movie to fit on 700mb cd .

I am using the latest divx codec which is 5.0.4. I followed the guide as mentioned b4 here...http://homepage.ntlworld.com/steven.hawkins1/DVDx_guide/#divx
and i am using a 1 gig duron.

So if any1 canhelp it will be much appreciated.

    THANX in advance.

  2. The output setting "volume don"t exceed" does not limit the size of your entire file. It merely splits the file at the volume you choose. For example, if your file is 2.1 gigs large and you choose "volume don't exceed 700MB", you will have three 700MB files. The only way to get a file to fit on a 700MB disc is to limit the entire file size. You do this when you choose the encoder in DVDx. When you choose the encoder that you want to encode the film, click on the configure button. A new window will pop up. You want to change the bitrate of the encoder so that the total file size (both video and audio) is less than 700MB. Get a bitrate calculator from the tools section of this webpage. It will help you choose the right bitrates for the audio and video to keep your file less than 700MB.

  4. Laddydaddy,

I trialed converting the monsters inc dvd (about 4 mins of it). I D/L
AVI/(X)(S)VCD Bitrate Calculator from the tools section.

    I came across two problrms.
1- My 3 min avi (monsters inc stopped 3 mins into encoding) is stil fairly big at 160 mb.

2- i changed the Encoding bitrate (divx 5.0.4) to 998kbs as recommened by, AVI/(X)(S)VCD Bitrate Calculator. Now the picture quality is very bad. it looks very white like the brightness on my PC is too high, (everything i view is perfect, so im assuming that the PC settings is ok )

The settings for DIVX 5.0.4 is
    Variable bitrate mode__1 pass
    Maximum bitrate______9980
    Encoding Bitrate______998 (as mentiond B4)

    Any thoughts?
    Also is it DVDX 2.2?
If you do converting as well what do u use?

    Thanx once again.

  5. Go to purpleman.cjb.net. He has guides on how to encode in divx format. I would suggest you use nandub (freeware) as the encoder.
It seems as if most people who encode divx films use this encoder. Nandub is available in the tools section of this website. DVDx has never been known for it's encoding ability. It is better used as a frameserver. Give nandub a try using purpleman's guides. He has a newbie guide for nandub as well as an advanced guide. Let me know how you make out.

  6. LADDYDADDY,

Howdy. Sorry bout the delayed reply but i had work and that. Anywayz i checked out that Purleman site and all the software for download doesn't exist anymore. Some do but most of the 1' i need rnt there.

So i was looking around and came across FLASKMPEg. Do u recommend it? If so do u know of any tutorial sites involing Flask.

  7. Go to http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/flask-divx4.htm. It is a guide to encoding divx using flaskmpeg and xmpeg. Xmpeg is the same as flaskmpeg but with a different gui and is supposedly more stable. Flaskmpeg with the bbmpeg plugin for mpg encoding was one of the more popular programs at one time. It has a lot of controls and is still considered a pretty good program for divx encoding, but not mpg encoding. Give it a try. The guide also has links to download the programs you need. I believe they are all freeware.

    Hipster,
How long a movie is Monster's, Inc.?
I just checked the length of Lilo and Stitch, at 85 minutes. It is fairly good quality, but I don't recall the bitrate I used in DVDx 2.2. It needed 2 CD-Rs for what I got.
Are you trying to make a VCD, SVCD, or what? Or areyou actually making an avi file? (Out of curiousity, why?)
If you want a DVD standalone playable (S) or VCD, it's in there. I have never made an avi with DVDx, but for (S) or VCD, the calculator is built in. Set your bitrate on the left, and on the right, under frames, (click "whole" first), the total size appears. Each increment of 800 meg will fit on 1 80 min CD-R, about 808 meg, actually. If you are trying to make a VCD, XVCD, or SVCD, DVDx will do it in a fairly quick fashion, about 1 1/2 to 1, SVCD, maybe 3 to 1.

    "Hipster,

    88.25 mins long

"Are you trying to make a VCD, SVCD, or what? Or areyou actually making an avi file? (Out of curiousity, why?) "

Ok. I have done a few SVCDs using good quality avi downloaded from the net. They r probably not DVD quality SVCD's but i tell you what, they come close to it (all 1 cd long).
    The movies are as followed.......
    Tarzan and Jane
    Cinderella
    Pinnochio
    Jungle Book
    All VERY VERY good quality

I also have used DVDX to make SVCD's directly from the dvd (in this case it's MONSTERS INC). The quality i get using 1 cd SVCD for Monsters Inc is Very VERy poor. Hence i am trying to make a good quality avi (around the 700mb size, just like the ones i've D/L from the net) to convert to SVCD. That's why.

    Thanx anywayz!!!!!!!!!

    Hipster,
Sorry, you're right, DVDx isn't gonna put 88 minutes on 1 CDR and be "good" quality.
I used another prog to convert a 1:47 DVD to 688 meg. It's watchable, high motion shows a little blocking, but still pretty good for 1 disk worth. Trouble is it's WMV format. Whether that can be converted to mpeg1, I don't know, nor the result. I hate to admit I can't find the program. All I can tell you is it puts about a 1 X 4 inch "label" on the screen "artech 365". If you know what that is, maybe you'll let me know. If it's still on my drives somewhere, I can't find it. It has to be simple, also, as I used it 7 months ago, and hadn't the foggiest notion what I was doing in video at that time, even more confused than I am now.
Oh, yes, the properties show an 863 kbps bit rate, 25 % less than mpeg1, but better than DVDx VCD default.
