I've just bought some DVDs from Canada that aren't available in the UK and would llike to know how I could get them to work if I can't hack my stand-alone. I presume that as the disks originate in North America, they will be NTSC standard (352x480, 30fps).
If I rip the disks and burn to DVD-R, I'm removing the region protection only. Will my player (JVC XV-S300BK) be able to play the disk, or will I have to re-size and frame serve?
I'm also curious as to what format Region 0 DVDs use for them to be compatible in all DVD players.
Your advice is appreciated.

PAL or NTSC is tv broadcasting norm. Differences are in resolution, frequency and some more that I don't understand.
Region is something different. It is just "software" protection.
You can have PAL DVD with region All (or 0, same thing different name) or you can have NTSC DVD with region All. That doesn't mean that your player can play it. DVD Player have to be able to play PAL or NTSC format. I assume that in your case you are looking for NTSC. So question is .... DOs your player plays NTSC too ? Look in manual or their website or here....Pinnacle Studio 8 and DV home video editing (ver.9 already home) -
If it comes down to it, you can rip the main movie files, and write an AviSynth script to convert from NTSC to PAL, or whatever you need to change to (depending on what region your player requires). I live in the US with a Region 1 player, and a friend brought back an Australian Region 4 (PAL) DVD that I was unable to view. Our only option became to convert the Region 4 PAL DVD to Region 1 NTSC. After a little trial and error, I got it done, and the DVD played great!
Good Luck!!! -
Hi,
Usually most of the DVD players sold in Europe would play both formats.
Most of the TVs will play ANY format automatically. I guess just removing the region restrictions will solve the problem.
One other option is to replace your current DVD player with an "universal" one. That's why I own a Samsung S224 which can be hacked very easily/remote/, would play both formats and is compatible virtually with any type of media /check the compatibility list/. I have a large collection of region 1 and region 2 DVDs that play on this one without any problem.
Good luck! -
What brand and model of TV do you have?
Some hacks for your player are at

You options:
1. Convert.
2. Or do what I did: Buy a cheap Mintek or Apex for under $50 and hack it. They work great, easy to hack, couldn't be more pleased. I buy PAL DVDs all the time, and play them in those players. They are also better at CD formats than the average player.I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored. -
As Gregg suggested you do not need to do anything to get these disks to play, other than remove the region protection. A region 0 (all region) NTSC DVD can basically be played on anything.
Obviously all tv's sold in countries which use NTSC will be able to display the signal. Pretty much all Pal tv's are in fact multiscan tv's and will play both PAL and NTSC. Even if your tv does not fall into this category, virtually all dvd players sold in PAL regions can convert NTSC to PAL 60Hz, which again should play on almost all PAL tv's.
There are only like 2% of tv/dvd player combinations in the world which cannot play an all region NTSC DVD.
So...just burn it. -
Thanks for the info guys, I'll let you know how I get on when the disks arrive (1-2 weeks I guess).

Well the NTSC DVD standard supports more than 720x480, but that is the industry standard. Almost any commercial NTSC DVD you buy will be encoded at 720x480.

Assuming there is no actual protection getting in the way, any dvd player can play any regional format, the only issue is if the tv can disply the signal it recieves. So no, the fps won't bother the player.

Thankyou, that's sweet music to my ears! Just ordered a new region free 16x DVD Rom (Samsung SD-616QBB) to rip it with in celebration!

OK guys and gals, here's an update.
Got my Due South Season 1 DVDs from Amazon Canada - Toronto to London UK in 3 days!!!!!!!!!
Ripped, transcoded with DVD2ONE and burned with Nero. Plays beautifully on my JVC XV-S300B DVD player and Philips 28PW6305.
For those about to rip, you don't have to worry about region code for this since Smartripper will remove it for you when it rips.
Now I have one more problem........how to pay for all the Reg 1 DVD's I've ordered!
Once again, thanks for all your help.
Regards,
Rob
