ok,
so I picked up a liteon 166 since a lot of people here seemed to say it ripped at high speeds, but in practice, it's not ripping at a higher speed at all!I'm only getting 2.6x
so I know there's a rip patch for the a105, but I thought that these were supposed to rip faster too.
Heya... on a side note... we should have a DVD-ROM section in dvdrhelp just like the section on DVD MEDIA, DVD HACKS, and DVD WRITERS

I have a Lite-On and it RIPs anywhere from 4X to 12X (depending on section of DVD being ripped and quality of the physical DVD - pressed vs burnt makes a difference).
It did, however, revert to 2X for some time until I realised XP had mysteriously changed the IDE controller to access in PIO mode instead of UltraDMA. You may want to check whether you have a similar problem (in XP, check via Device Manager - check DVD-Rom to see which controller it is on, and which device it is, and then check the actual IDE controller to see what mode it is using.)
Also, you have not mentioned your machine specs. I assume you have something that can deal with high through-put, because putting a Ferrari steering wheel in a Datsun 180b won't make it go faster.
PS
The only way I could get XP to swap to UltraDMA was to delete the Secondary IDE controller (ie. the one it was on) and reboot so it redetected everything. Then it was sweet. -
and DMA it is!
don't know why but xp had done the same to me too
woo-hoo!
seems to be going at 4.9 and rising! (seems to take a while to go up to full speed, don't know why it takes slow to raise... but I'm happy it's rising!) -
Good to hear.
Seems DMA has worked like viagra for you if it is rising with the LiteOn.The glass is neither half-full, nor half-empty.
It is simply twice as big as it needs to be.
