i have converted hundreds of divx's/xvid's to dvdr but have thought about increasing the bitrate as they usually convert to about 1.5-2.5 gig. I would rather have these at 4 gig + but when increasing the bitrate so that tmpgenc fills the disc the video, when played on a standalone, is extremely jerky (and i mean jerky the video pauses every couple of seconds). Is this a problem with my dvd player or am i converting wrong?

Hi,
it's a problem with your standalone - mine does the same thing! DVD players can only play vcd with a certain bitrate range, in most cases no bitrate higher than 1150. Have you thought about SVCD?
