Difference between MPEG 1 and 2? & alternative to TmpgE

1) What is the difference between Mpeg 1 and 2, graphic wise?
My trial version of TmpgEnc's Mpeg-2 feauture has expired, so now I'm left Mpeg 1.

2) Is there an alternative - that is just as good as - TmpgEnc, that is freeware? Too encode AVI to Mpeg format, if you are unaware of what sort of program I'm talking about.

TMPGenc is really cheap for all that it does and is ..

The only freeware is BBMPEG, but it is not as fast and no filters.
