I'm trying to capture a VHS that was recorded in long play. When I play it through Premiere, there isn't any problems with the playback screen, however, once I cature it through Premiere, the playback screen shows video that seems to be dropping frames, i.e. the video is no longer smooth
I'm using a Matrox RT2500 to capture the video & understand that long play means fitting twice as much onto the VHS than usual which means a loss of quality. I'm just uncertain with the resulting capture & want to know what I need to do in order to get the footage captured properly.
Your help is much appreciated.

The way the VHS tape was recorded shouldn't have any bearing on dropped frames. What are your system specs? Normally dropped frames means your PC isn't powerful enough to handle the workload.
I've captured a lot of tapes that were recorded on different speeds, and the speed of the tape made no difference. -
First, if you capture (looking the other way) how does the video play back from your HD? On my computer at times the preview is jerky while capturing but that data is fine. Bothers me but results count.
If the play back is still jerky look at your hardware or over tasking your operating system. -
A similar problem happened to me about a year ago when I was still futtzing around trying to make a Winnov capture card work. I could capture SP tapes reasonably well but when I tried to capture an EP tape I was getting massive amounts of dropped frames. Never could get it to work.
Don't use a capture card anymore (Ahh, Videocamera Analog to Digital converters!); I can't believe all the time I wasted trying the capture card route. -
PC Specs are:
AMD Athalon 1.8 Ghz with 256 DDR Ram, MAtrox RT 2500 capture card, 80 gig dedicated HD for capturing & another 60 gig HD for OS/Software.
I've captured a few standard play videos & I've had no problems with them, so long as I've got a clean Hard Disk to play with & it has been de-fragged.
I haven't actually tried playing back the captured data, so I'll try that and see if the results are fine. It's just that while it is capturing, the playback screen is really jerky & from previous experience with Standard play VHS, that means problems capturing... Thus the call for assistance... -
I tried capturing the long play VHS again and it worked without any problems. I don't know why it didn't work the first time, but I've notice that after I've defraged the computer, i need to give the computer a "rest" before it does anything properly.
