I want to break down a 5.1 AC3 file into the individual channels in WAV format. Can anyone recommend a freeware/shareware s/w to do this?

Specifically, is there any other software available, other than besweet?

I think Sonic Foundry SoftEncode will. But not shareware. I don't know of any free/shareware that works with AC3. Look into BeSweet too. (I have proprietary stuff at work that does most of this, and I also have audio engineers to work with.)
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  3. Just use BeSweet with the "Six Waves" (-6ch) output setting. Then you will have 6 mono .wav files, with varying suffixes in the filename (FL, FR, SL, SR, C, LFE)

As txpharoah said, to use anything else will be expensive, and BeSweet is free!

    aH!,

I've tried BeSweet once and quit shortly. Couldn't make it do what I wanted. I have to tame this beast. Guess it can't be tougher than Scenarist. Whatever... That's where the real fun is.
