  1. Got the RCA 5240 while waiting for a back-ordered Apex 1500. Deciding whether to keep it. One odd problem: Some, but not all, of the filenames of my mp3's show up twice. Only the second occurence actually plays though. In one folder, where all the mp3's are from the same source, all names are duplicated. It one case, the two names are different, but otherwise they're identical. The mp3s have nothing obvious in common. Not VBR. Besides, the player doesn't read the data until it plays it. Right?
Burned two disks using Toast on a Mac. Second one I used strict ISO9660 Single Session, no Joliet, MS-DOS or Mac extensions. No difference. Can this be fixed? Anyone else see this?
Also, any negative comments on the RCA 5240 would be appreciated while the 30-day return is in effect.

There's no MP3 shuffle and (as you've probably noticed by now) the first part of MP3 songs gets cut off. The 8-character MP3 interface sucks.

The 1500 will have much better MP3 support. The interface will be somewhat reminiscent of Windows Explorer, it will support 11 characters (including non-alphanumeric characters), and it is possible to shuffle MP3s. Just make sure that your discs' "sessions" are "closed" or "finalized" - otherwise the player will reject the disc. If you have an "open" disc, the solution is to burn one more song (if you have room), or perhaps even a blank 0-byte text file to the disc - just select "finalize" or "close" the disc/session when adding the new file.

Thanks, but I've heard bad comments on Apex lately for non-mp3 playing, so I think I'll stick with the RCA. Only occasionally do I lose the beginning of songs. And I have no idea how Windows Explorer works

Anyway, I managed to solve the duplicate names problem. Perhaps I'm the only Mac user here , but I think the problem was in the way the Mac *can* store files. All files can have two 'forks', data and resource. It the case of music and pictures, all data is in the data fork and the resource fork is not used, unless you have custom icons, which I did not. Nevertheless, it seems some of the files did have a resource fork, since I ran a utility (Graphic Converter actually) to remove all resources and the files collectively took 1 meg less space. So something was on some of them. I guess when saving in a non-mac format, the resource fork saved as a separate file with the same name, resulting in the duplicated names.
I also stripped off the ID3 tags, since I'd read here that they cause the beginnings of the songs to be skipped. I can't say if it helped yet since it wasn't a big problem anyway.

OK. Just an FYI: this particular RCA model (not all RCA models, however) is made by the some company (Shinco) that makes three of Apex's players:

    AD-500A
    AD-703
    AD-800A

So if you've heard bad comments about any of those Apex players, unfortunately, they may also apply to your RCA player.
