  1. I'm trying to figure out what the aspect ratio of a 1.85.1 anamorphic widescreen dvd is. Obviously a full screen dvd would be 4:3, but what would this be?

Aspect ratio in the movies themselves vary widely. From 4:3 (for ancient Cinema Movies and recent TV episodes) to 16:9 (official widescreen TV and some movies) to 1.85, 2.xx, etc.

For DVDs, however, there are only two "legal" aspect ratios. The first is 4:3 and the second is 16:9.

Anything other than that is encoded with hard coded letterbox black stripes on top of 16:9 encoding.

The idea is that the movie will play as wide as possible on a widescreen TV (that has an aspect ratio of 16:9).

So, your 1.85 anamorphic is a 16:9 frame with some extra black stripes on top and bottom.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
