  1. I want to convert an Avi to SVCD and I usually use TMpeg for VCD encoding.

When I convert to SVCD is it normal for there to be no frames shopwing during the encoding process?

For example, when I encode to VCD, TMpeg shows the frames as it is encoding.

    Thanks in advance.

The preview window is set in your preferences (environmental settings?) in TMPGEnc and it can be turned off. Are you using 2-pass VBR? For the first pass you get the message "analyzing" and on the second pass it actually encodes and displays.

Ok, you're making VCD's and SVCD's using TMPGEnc. The rate control mode in TMPGEnc can be set to CBR (constant bitrate) and VBR (variable bitrate). For definitions of each check the Glossary section.

If you're doing everything exactly the same when making your VCD's or SVCD's, only selecting a different template, then the display should be exactly the same. If you're doing anything different then that could be why. When encoding SVCD's it can display the movie in the preview window if it is enabled, just like when making VCD's.

  6. Okay, now Im confused. I have just realised that after I click start, to begin the encosding process, it actually does nothing.

So, I pressed stop and aborted encoding. Then clicked start again, and I got an error saying "You are trying to encode to MPEG2 format, you need to have DVD playing software 9installed on your system"

I have PowerDVD 4 installed on my system. I have 2 DVD drives too. My standard drive, and a DVD-Burner.

    What is the problem here?

I think it's telling you that you need an mpeg2 codec installed on your system, but I think PowerDVD does that automatically when you install it. Check this guide: https://www.videohelp.com/tmpgenc.htm Scroll to the bottom and read the common TMPGEnc problems, esp. the part about Direct Show priority...try increasing it.
