  1. First: I want to buy a DVD-ROM, but i donīt which (Aopen or and AcER)boths DVD-ROM(16X),CD-ROM(40X)? somebody can give me an advice.

Second:I transfor some movies to VCD format, i am using TMPEnc the last version, and the result of the conversion are not bad, but i think that could be better, i am using a video card with 4Mb AGP, if i change the video card to better with more video memory, the quality of the result video can be better? The quality of the result video are very closely related to the video card?

  2. Ok for starters, most of the Aopen and Acer DVD drives are in actuallaty a Pioneer OEM Drive, so you might as well buy a Pioneer for cheaper! the 106S model (slot drive 16x/40x) costs 54$

Now as for ripping, all the DVD's will give you the same quality when ripping, however, playback has nothing to do with the drive, it could be the quality of your card and monitor, and of course also the Playback software you are using.

  5. This is more or less the system I have at home, but you really don't need something like it:

    EPoX 8KTA3 KT133A chipset
    AMD Thunderbird 1000Mhz CPU
    384mb SDRAM PC133
    2 x 45gb Western Digital HDD
    Pioneer 106S 16x/40x DVD-ROM
    Sanyo BP1400P 16x/10x/40x CDRW
    GeForce2 MX400 with TV-Out

The only thing I would tell you to change would be your Trident 4mb card, you can buy a cheap GeForce2 MX200 for as little as 50$ to 60$, and it will be well worth it, i'm not a gamer, and I did not find spending over 100$ on a graphics card, so I bought the best cheapest one I could get, and quality is great.

As for playback software, I always use PowerDVD, because I find it's playback quality to be one of the highest, although WinDVD has more support for SVCD for example, it's playback is rather bad in my opinion.

  7. Not 100% sure but I believe:

    MPEG 4 = DivX
    MPEG 2 = SVCD

  8. MPEG-4 is MPEG-4. DivX is based on a type of MPEG-4 video.

MPEG-2 is MPEG-2. Both DVD and SVCD use MPEG-2 as the basis for encoding the video.
