I wonder if there is a way to block IE from opening a website

I'm tired of clicking chat room links and being sent to "outwar.com"

Is there a way i can prevent IE from opening this link?

  3. I was going to recommend the same thing as shift, but the fact is that I have a feeling it won't work...

    What will work is:

Use Mozilla, the free, open-source web browser. It has built-in pop-up blocker

wait..this might be your problem..I may have misread...

Try a software firewall, and block access to these specific websites. That works well, too -- not just pop-ups, but any site you don't accidently want to go to

Man, I should just go to bed...I don't even think I'm helping...

    Hi Greg,

The best way is to use a firewall. I use IPCop www.ipcop.org which is a Linux distribution. You can use an old i486 machine, and configure it as your firewall, and you can connect as many machines as you want through it. It supports regular RS-232 modems and Ethernet connections ( Cable, DSL, etc. )
You can block by IPs, by domains, whatever you want
This will also protect your network from any crackers trying to break into your machine. Nobody from the Internet will be able to access your machine

    PopUp Stopper from pcworld.com (freeware)
Ad Blocking in Norton Internet Security.

I don't have ad trouble anymore.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  6. http://www.panicware.com pop-up stopper

I really like this program If you enable "aggressive stoppage" nothing gets through. You can hold down control when you click on a link to enable desired new windows/popups. Also freeware

I been using this badboy since before it became an open source project: http://sourceforge.net/projects/puk/

Its great, it blocks almost nothing by default so you train it as you go along. Very easy to use and can be configured to say pretty much out of the way. That way you can only have it block what you want.

Of course when I'm on a mac as I am now I simply hit command+K and block all popups unless I now the page I'm on has like a popup login or something ahead of time.

BTW I know not everyone likes macs but keep an eye on Safari, its kicking some serious butt for such a short time in development and the new tabbed browsing support is super nice to have on a nonpay brower for the mac. Heck I wish Apple would port a PC version at this point.

Also Karate Media is right, a software firewire could totoally block the site alltogether. A hardware one would do so even better :P

It's not popups from the site, it's like ur in AIM and in a chatroom and a link looks nice ( ) and u click it and it turns out to be a link to outwar.com

Would adding outwar.com's IP to my hosts file to block it work?

I"m just sick of beign tricked and then helping these ppl out.

  9. AHH! That's what I thought you meant (in my own sleepy way last night -- sorry for the hazy writing) - that's why I doubled back on recommending Mozilla for the problem, 'caue I started to think you didn;t mean pop-ups...

Firewall would probably be the best way. Just enter it in as an "always block" site and yr good to go...

You wouldn't want to add outwar.com's IP to your hosts file, you'd want to add 127.0.0.1 as the IP and outwar.com (or whatever) as the name. I think in some versions of Windows you also need to reboot to make sure the DNS cache is cleared when you update the hosts file.

There is a number of ways to block a web site.

    1) On IE, go to pulldown, "Tools" > click "Internet Options", then go into "Security" and look for "Restricted sites" click this and push botton "Sites". You record unwanted web site's address there.

    2) Use a pop up blocker program and the browser, Netscape 7.01 have this option available to stop the popups coming up.

I am sure CNET's "Download com" would have a popup blocker program. Check out: http://download.com.com/2001-20-0.html?tag=stbc.gp or ZDNet Downloads. Check out on: http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/2001-20-0.html

    3) Get yourself a firewall to block a web site. I think Symantec got popup blockers included as well such as Internet Security and Norton Anti-Virus.

Anyway, I got ad blockers and this stops it from going into my computer.
