I don't know what happened, now it only does 1.9X or 2.0X. I haven't done anything to the PC itself and all the processes I use to rip have remained the same. Any suggestions?

I use DVD Decrypter to do my ripping. Normal rip speed depends on the dvd itself. Some dvd's will rip between 4X and 6X, others will rip all the way up to 13X.
I have also had the problem you have experienced. Suddenly for no apparent reason ripping speed decreased to the 2X to 3X range. I had not changed anything, installed any new programs, or upgraded any software. I checked that my ASPI layer was intact, DMA was active, etc. Everything was set correctly, but still slow ripping. The only solution I have found was to restore the the PC to a previously saved point. For this reason, I keep my pc backups up-to-date so that I don't lose any recent information.

I am using a Pine 16X dvd-rom. It is a rather generic brand (about $60). I can also rip at those speeds with my Cendyne (rebadged Pioneer AO5) with the hacked firmware that breaks the 2X dvd reading limitation.

Arrgh!
I have the same sort of symptoms as Chips144.
Was ripping beautifully on my Lite-On drive. Once or twice i have had the drive revert to PIO mode, but was easily able to fix by re-adding the IDE controller drive. Now it says it is still DMA mode, and jumps in RIPS from ridiculously low to reasonable highs (according to DVD Decrypter), but only averages like 1.3x. Same happens on my burner (which would normally average at 2x, but now is around 1.3x). They are both on the same IDE controller.
Before I shuffling cables and re-imaging from a Ghost backup, has anyone seen this before and perhaps can suggest another solution or something to check?

Thanks dude. Was in fact hardware related.
Turns out my Ultra IDE cable to the Hard Drives was dodgy and was forcing my HD to PIO mode. Have replaced the cable and the HD's now are DMA5, and subsequently can receive data at the rate the DVD drive spits at it. Much better.
It also explains why the DVD drives (which are on a different cable/secondary controller) were spiking at high speeds, but averaging so low.
