  1. Hi,
I recorded from VHS to my computer with .mpeg format 2.4MB/s. Then I use TMPGEnc that file into .mpeg for VCD. I have a question:

With the same file of 3 minutes that I recorder earlier,

File 1: I go to "Files" - "MPEG Tools" - tab "Merge & Cut", select type "MPEG-1 Video-CD", name the file and click "Run". The file 1 is made.

File 2: If I don't do anything like in file 1, instead, I go to "Files" - "Project Wizard" - select "Video-CD NTSC", follow all the default steps. The file 2 is made.

Both files can be burned into VCD fine using Nero. However, file 1 has total of 58MB and file 2 has only 30MB. What is the difference between these 2 VCD files? Doesn't the VCD .mpg file have to be the same like 1150kbps, 29.97kps?

So on the .mpg file of 1 hour, if I do exactly like file 2, it'll fit into the VCD. If I do exactly like file 1, each VCD can store up to only 30+mintues.

Please help me to explain or to advise. Should I do like file 2 or file 1? I have A LOT of video to make into VCD and I just want to know if there is any difference of those 2 VCD format. Thanks so much in advance.

  2. Sounds rather strange, but according to standard, the method which gave you a 30mb file size is the accurate one, since 1min=10mb in VCD Standard, so I suggest you check again what you did, cause it doesn't seem logical at all.

When you go through the wizard and tell it to encode a VCD, it reencodes your video to a proper VCD-compliant bitrate, so it comes out to 30MB for 3 minutes.

When you select VideoCD under "Merge and Cut", it does not reencode the video at all. It simply multiplexes the file in the same way that a VCD-compliant MPEG would be multiplexed. Your file will still have a bitrate of 2.4Mb/s. 58MB is about right for 3 minutes at that bitrate. It is not really a compliant VCD, it's just made to look like one and some players will handle it just fine that way.

  4. Thank you so much for your help. I will use the steps to make like "File 2" above. Like you all said, they are rather correct. Thanks again.
