I used to post messages about how to convert DV to AVI. Well, I have that down pat now, but I was told that using a 2-pass operation with a bitrate of 1500-1600 would give me decent filesize and no noticable quality loss. My videos are sort of blurry, even when I use a sharpen filter in VirtualDub. Can someone help me out?

A little more info. What format are you converting too? Divx, SVCD/CVD, VCD, DVD, etc. Also, what input, and output resolution.

    To DivX.
I resize to 320X240. The input is like 700+ something

    hi T-E-M..

    >> I resize to 320X240. The input is like 700+ something

There you have it !! ..that's why it's blurry.. cause you stretch such a
small resolution to full screen, it's gonna be blury

Try encoding your divX's to 352x480 minimum. I do. And, they seem to
    come out pretty well.

Also, you might have to give some blaim in your encoding process too
Like, for instance, did you IVTC or De-Interlace your source ?? That is, do
you know if it's an Interlace (every frame is distorted/dirty vs. ever 4th
and 5th frame dirty, as this would be a Telecined source.

Also, TV sets can be blurry too you know. If you are playing throught your
cards' TV-OUT, as some do here.

Also, how about your monitor too.. etc.

Also, if you used any filtering in your encoding process - are others factors
    in blurry encodes.

Just some things to think about.

I didn't de-interlace it. Its through my DVC not TV. I don't think its my monitor, because DVD Rips aren't blurry. I use a sharpening filter.

    hi TEM..

post a sample clip, or a pic of a DVD rip vs. whatever you are curently
encoding (your issues of blurryness) using the same params and specs.

    * U/L your sample/pics to your webspae (all providers give 2MB free space
    .. as a minimum)

    * then, use the (img)yourwebhost/~username/pics/...com(/img)

Note, remember to replace the "(" and ")" with "[" and "]"

What do you mean the input is '700+ something'? Do you mean the input resoution? If your resizing from 720x480 to 352x240, your output should still look good, although you will see some loss in clarity (slight softening). At no point should a Divx of 352x240 require a bitrate of 1500. Your blurry problem is comming from somewhere else. Especially if your source is a DVD rip, and your using Bicubic to resize.

What steps are you taking to encode, and what software?
