Size of an mpeg depends only on the length of the clip in minutes and the bitrate in bits/second. What are you making, VCD,SVCD, DVD? What is your bitrate? What programs are you using? What is the length of your avi's? Provide more info and maybe people can help out.

  3. I'm trying to make mpeg 2 since it is xvid codec, here is info for one of the avi files

    Frame Rate: 23.976
    Frames: 108117, length: 1h 15m 9s
    Size: 576 x 256 pixel

I used mainconcept mpeg encoder, I wanna convert the avi to mpeg2 if possible, but the file size is killing me. Thanks

You made a MPEG into an AVI? Well, AVI is a big and bloated video format.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

Are you just making an mpeg2, or are you trying to make an mpeg2 for DVD or SVCD? What settings are you using for resolution and especially bitrate?

It seems to me that you're encoding at about the SVCD maximum bitrate of 2500 kbits/second. This will give you a file size of about 1.8 GB. Check the Tools section for Bitrate Calculators to help you check the file size. You can lower the bitrate to a point beyond which quality will suffer.

I think he made an mpeg from an avi. I guess how big and how bloated would depend on the compression involved (if any). In this case it's an xvid which is much smaller than the mpeg he's making.

  7. it is possible to fit the entire movie of 1 hour 15 mins onto 1 cd, it all comes down to the bitrate, what you got to think about is if you have to chage the bitrate from anything lest than the normal svcd rate then you dont really need to have it in svcd format, vcd will do just as fine

it dont matter what format the avi was in either xvid, divx they are all dif types of codecs, encoding to vcd/svcd willl still create an mpg file

i have written a small document in word that explains how to alter bitrates and when to fit/not fit a movie on 1 cd

obviously the higher the bit rate the better quality the end result, BUT and it is a big BUT, it also comes down to how the avi was coded and the quality of that will also determine the quality of the mpg file

if you want me to send ya the file then email me mat_stuff@hotmail.com

  8. I converted AVI to MPEG2 for SVCD, my bitrate setting was set to variable bitrate.

Mat_stuff@hotmail.com can u paste the doc on here?

    Thanks guys

  10. I am having similar problems using Mainconcept and CCE encoders the file size of a avi to mpeg2 convert is at least twice the size of the TMPG at the same bitrate and the pic quality is not as good, IMHO. I just encoded a 50 min clip using CCE Basic at 7000 CBR and the file was over 3 GB and TMPG's file was 900 MB. That is why i am sticking with TMPG. File size and pic quality are more important to me than speed. Also TMPG keeps the aspect ratio correct Mainconcept and CCE do not. I know that you can frameserve to both to correct this but TMPG does it for me.
