I'm pretty new myself, but in my [limited] experience, I believe you need one more step: you need a program like Maestro or an equivalent to compile your MPG file into IFO and VOB files. At the end of the compilation process, they usually wind up in a directory called VIDEO_TS. These are the files that Nero will recognize and burn to your DVD.

  3. Not shure what is your problem. You want to convert an AVI file to SVCD? If this is what you want to do you need the Nero SVCD plugin, otherwise you wont be able to do it. By the way you should use other program to convert you avi file, nero does not do a god job.

You can burn as an SVCD with VCDeasy, it's free and in the Tools section.
