I normally use Princo media for my projects but I gather it is not so good in the long term. I want to make archive copies of home movies for 20 years from now. So what would be my best bet? Opinions please?

  2. I heard BeAll from Samsung is excellent when it comes to durability and life. (100 years they say...)

Ritek should be better than Princo and all other expensive medias such as Pioneer, Taiko Yuden, etc..

Why do you make your comments about Ritek? I have never heard this before

  4. why is samsung listed 4 times?

Id say the brand name media with lifetime warranty is something to go for.

With Apple having such a large market share, why is it not on this list. Its WAY more popular than the other half-brands listed, at least with pros.

And Ritek? Those go on the low end of the quality spectrum. Bad discs all around, at least the cheap and uncoated silver-top ones. You cannot have any lifetime on an uncoated-discs. Don't believe me? Call me in 10 years. I have CD-R in bad shape, all uncoated, at least 7 years old now.

Apple Apple Apple Apple ! Nuf said.

txpharoah I feel the need to point out that I've burned hundreds of Riteks at both 1x and 2x with zero problems related to the media itself over the coarse of the last year or so. Also I feel the need to point out that even my very expensive TDK CDRs only have coating on the top that is simple art and mostly is silver.

  7. If apple are so great, referring to the dvd media list on this site, they appear to be rebadged maxells judging from the media code, wouldnt it be better to just buy maxell discs for cheaper?

  8. Apple? I think I bought five of them when I first got my Sony burner (and they were not cheap) and haven't seen them in any store since then. I use Ritek and have burned over 300 now with zero failures.

Apple, for the longest time, was Pioneer-made. Probably still is, but I'd have to check again. 100% accurate discs.

The Ritek were added at request
The reason for 4 Samsungs is that the poll software did it when I added the Ritek! It was also kind enough to delete 1 vote for Verbatim at the same time.
The reason Apple is not included is that I have never seen them in a store!

I dont know who Apple rebrands from currently but I do know their disk prices are fairly cut throat for name brand disk. Matter of fact you can get them as cheap or cheaper then Verbatium in many cases with the 2x ones.

Apple does this for good reason, they dont care about making tons of cash of the disk I think, they do it because they want to have a disk their users can pick up and be confident they work, after all they were the first to put DVD-Rs into their systems.

Apple discs have always been 2x. All of them, marked or not. And that's the reason: they provide quality. Discs are only $3 each. You get what you pay for.

The poll software is buggy to say the least
Here were the votes before I tried to fix the multiple Samsung entries

    Fujifilm 7% [ 1 ]
    Imation 0% [ 0 ]
    Maxell 14% [ 2 ]
    Memorex 0% [ 0 ]
    Pioneer 7% [ 1 ]
    Samsung 28% [ 4 ]
    TDK 7% [ 1 ]
    Ritek 14% [ 2 ]
    Verbatim 21% [ 3 ]

    Total Votes : 14

    And after I fixed it!
    Fujifilm 25% [ 1 ]
    Imation 0% [ 0 ]
    Maxell 50% [ 2 ]
    Memorex 0% [ 0 ]
    Pioneer 25% [ 1 ]
    Verbatim 0% [ 0 ]
    TDK 0% [ 0 ]

If you can fix it please
What this has done to me is "

Actually Apple, Verbatium, and TDK should all be fine for long term data storeage, Maybe the others as well as I've not really used alot of them. But apple and perhaps verbatium would be your best 2 picks based on quality/price.

  18. Just stick to brand names that are Made In Japan. That way you get a high possibility of getting a discs that manufactured by one of the quality companies. Discs that are Made In Taiwan are good also but only if you know what you are buying. If you go with a brand name that is Made In Taiwan, you have a chance of getting those crappy Taiwanese companies like CMC.

And Maxell too. PVC (Pioneer Video Corp.) has/will stop making media

Any media with a lifetime warranty is good.

Maxell, Pioneer, Verbatium, TDK, Mitsui, etc....
