    Only on Japanese site, so dunno what the improvements are. I have no 4x discs left so can't say whether it fixes the problem or not.

    Cheers

  2. well hopefullyits not be like 2.0e where it only burns accu media at 1x

  3. Another ? I wonder when they will release one that will allow you to burn 4.37GB on CD :jester:

  4. Well "accu media" are manufactured and rated as 1x. It is flaw (or luck) that we can burn them at 2x.

    Where do you get firmware from? I have a NEC1100A, does anyone know if there are any updates or firmware. And what exactly does firmware do?

  6. Improvements (compare to 1.0f, 1.0g, 2.0c 2.0e):

    => Improvement in write efficiency
    => Improvement in read efficiency
    => Improved handling of bad media (the ones with uneven weight distribution)
    => Playback compatibility improvement for music CDs

    i.e., there is NO improvement for the "how come my cheapo crapo 1x media won't burn in 4x" people.

    I've yet to see an argument where someone is trying to get 1x media to burn at 4x, it's all about getting CERTIFIED 4x media to burn at 4x as it should.

    I saw an article about the latest firmware for the Pioneer A05/105 stating that the drive now reads the writing stratagy from the x4 media as it's on the disc. Meaning less frequent firmware updates.

    Maybe this is what the Sony will do now, if a disc is poor quality or not good enough for 4x that is why the drive will write at a lower speed.

    I've not heard of anyone having problems with good quality branded media at 4x DVD-R speed, don't foget DVD writing is highly optimised compared to CD writing.

    A note, the Ritek G03 media only writes at 2x on the Pioneer A05/105 with official firmware, yet writes at 2x flawlessly and the DRU-500A.

    I also note that Ritek Media G04 has always written fine at x4 on my drive - obviously a good batch.

  17. yeh i did some work into HOW good the dru500a on 1.0d firmware and i wasnt very impressed. Compatability-wise its not good, the burner verified it ok, btu the burner can do that, its optics are better than a regular dvd player.

    Just a note to say I upgraded my Sony DW-U10A to a 500A with latest firmware, 2.0f, and it now works ok, whereas before it was locking up my machine whenever I put a dvd in the drive - although it had been partially working at first. I had written dvd's ok when I first got the drive, but this had become impossible recently. Now it seems really solid.

    In addition it writes audio cds that play on both my cd players, not just one, so that has clearly been improved too.

    Thanks for the people on this site for telling us about this upgrade.

    So I guess if you are happy with your firmware then don't upgrade.

    Can't find 2.0c only http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=302 2.0e for you, sorry.

  21. Accu media are 1x certified media.... Burning at 2x is luck... During my test, I was not able to play them when burned at 2x speed..

  22. Just curious ... is there a way to backup the Sony dru500ax Firmware before applying a new one ?

    Thanx

  23. Does anyone know of anyway to revert from 2.0f to 2.0c firmware.

    I was getting 2x write speed on 2x disks with 2.0c. Now I am relegated to 1x on 2x disks and 2x on 4x disks.

    It appears that I am not the only one with this problem. Any solutions.

    Thanks

    Vern

    im using ritek 4x discs with my dru-500a. under firmware 1.0g, i could only burn at 2x, so i upgraded to 2.0f. still cant burn at 4x, only 2x max. i dont think ritek and sony are compatible with each other. haven't tried any other 4x media yet.

    Just a speculation, but dosen't the drive slow down the burn speed to prevent buffer underrun? If this is the case, maybe it would pay to look at some of the other elements in the chain. Like I said though, this is just a speculation.

    I've tried over 10 different brands of 4x DVD-Rs, only Verbatims and Traxdata DVD-R burning @ 4x all the way through
