i am trying to convert a .avi file to dvd i am using tmpge but it appears to be takng a long time would it be ok to split the file into 2 as this is how i used to do vcds.
would the program i am going to use to burn nero be ok using 2 files i am very new to this so any help would be very much apreciated.

Splitting the AVI in two and doing seperate encodes is fine, and when the two files are completed you can then use TMPGenc (MPEG Tools) to merge them into one before burning.
Just note though that if you are encoding at Constant Bit Rate(CBR) there is no difference, if you are using 2 pass VBR the bit allocation is only being estimated over each half, you would lose the benefit of allocation over the whole video, but that is a minor loss. -

converting can take a long time. A 1.5 hour avi can take between6-12 hours to convert. Is this thevsort of timeframe you are experiencing?
Splitting your avi into 2 avis will not speed the converion. It will take long because you will have to spend time joining your mpgs together.
