SVCD encoding taking forever! whats up??

i ripped my dvd with smart ripper, then i tried to use Tmpgenc PLUS to encode but the wizard kept asking me what mpeg i wanted to encode.
well wait, i am trying to encode to mpeg2, right? so i gave up and used DVDx 1.6 to encode to mpeg2, that program asked me for the .isof file i wanted to convert to mpeg2 so it seemed to know what i was talkin about.

WELL ITS WORKING BUT AFTER 8 HOURS IT ONLY ENCODED 9 MINUTES.
I GOT A PENTIUM 4, ITS AT 100% CPU USAGE, WHATS UP???
i encoded to vcd and it took like 9 hours. now SVCD IS GONNA TAKE LIKE 3 DAYS?

is DVDx just not a good encoder? TmpgencPLUS just seemed so complicated and wanted to take my mpg and make it a mpg, it made no sense!

you can encode to mpeg2 in TMPGEnc, use the project wizard in File

that'd be your be best.

but me to am having a suddenly longer time encoding to mpeg2 too, even using TMPGEnc

took me 26:55hrs to encode 44mins of film

You've left out so many details, I can't even answer you.

I suggest DVD2AVI to extract the audio/video from VOB, then open the D2V file in TMPGenc. Have it encode to SVCD MPEG2 output. If you don't understand the program, find a guide here on this site. Go to the guides area. There are several.

The guide in my signature is mainly for converting VHS to DVD, but reading through some of the TMPGenc part may help you out.

If you really don't know what you are doing (and even if you do have some idea) the best bet is download DVD2SVCD. It will work with TMPGenc, and it takes care of all the settings for you. You just have to point it at TMPGenc. That seems like a very long time to encode with a p4. Did you select a lot of filters? You can try CQ - Constant Quality - mode which will let you do a decent VBR with only one pass, and that will cut your encode time in half.

and if its anything like the DivX QB then it will be of better quality ie better use of bits then even a 2-pass

just heaps hard to tell what size you'll end up with....which could be a slow process in the long run....

DVD2SVCD has a size calculator for CQ mode that samples the movie a few times to get an estimate of the final file size. Takes about 30-60 minutes to run the test. It is pretty accurate.
