  1. So I'm a pretty ipatient person - I would just love to be able to convert divx avi's to mpg lightening quick. So what are some tips on speeding up the process? Right now I'm using TMPGEnc on windows xp. Would it be faster perhaps if I used some softwre in Linux?
I tried using Nero to convert the file and it went fairly quick - but every couple seconds the video gets all blocky....Any way to fix that?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  2. Get a faster CPU/new PC and try CCE instead of TMPGenc. I'm currently running an AMD 2100 and CCE 2.5. I get speeds of about 0.6x source runtime for DVD encodes, and 0.4~0.5x source runtime for Divx (YUY2) encodes (IIRC I haven't touched DivX in a while).

CCE is ~4x faster than TMPGenc per pass. But it's really CPU dependant.

A faster CPU is definitely the answer. I recently changed from a 266MHz P2 to my current CPU (Athlon XP 2000) and the difference is amazing. I went from taking about 17 hours to encode 50 minutes of AVI to SVCD in 2-pass mode (TMPGEnc), to only taking 25-30 minutes (CCE). According to CCE my 2-pass SVCD encodes are slightly over double real-time

  4. As everyone says, encoding is VERY cpu intensive. SO the only sure fire way of getting faster encodes is a faster CPU. You can use a more efficient encoder like CCE or Mainconcept but you will get a much bigger improvement going from you old 400 to a more recent 2Ghz + CPU.
