I do a fair amount of VCD encoding on my current setup, which is a PII 400, and a 20GB & 80GB WD Cavier @ 7200RPM. I get about 3.7 fps with FlasK or TMPGEnc. I have the option, however, to recieve a free Athlon 600 or a PIII 600. I would favor the speed increase either processor would bring, but I was wondering... which one would be the best for encoding? Thanks

Entire system, or just cpu? you may be able to use the PIII by buying a slotket adapter.
Those cpu's used to benchmark pretty close together. With money not the issue and all else equal, take the PIII. Otherwise get the most ram you can get.
As far as actual mpeg encoding, I'm not aware of any comparative benchmarking so my suggestion is not from a pure video standpoint.
If anyone knows of a web page listing encoding benchmarks for cpu's, please speak up, it would be very interesting...
