  1. OK, here's the situation. I currently have 5 tapes that I need to capture to my hard drive from my Sony MiniDV camera via FireWire.

Normally, I capture straight to Premiere 6.0 or 6.5. However, it seems to drop a lot of frames when I try to capture a whole tape. It only seems to work well when I capture smaller portions of the tape (around 10 minutes each).

I really want to capture each whole tape.

Then, I decided to try and capture with Windows MovieMaker 2 using the DV quality. All seemed to work very well, until I imported the captured video into Premiere 6.0 and 6.5. It is saying the video size is only 360x240? Windows MovieMaker 2 and Vegas 4 both report the video is 740x480.

Anyone one have any idea why Premiere only sees it as 360x240?

If no one can resolve this problem, does anyone have a better way to capture video from these tapes with minimum dropped frames and keeping the size at 720x480 in Premiere?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  2. Have you tried exporting the footage out of Premiere in the format you are looking for (eg, into mpg2 if you are looking to make DVD) and then examining the quality? It may sound like a cop-out, but the numbers could just be wrong -- although I couldn't explain why. But if the final product looks the way you want it to, then don't worry about the numbers (for now).

Also, what functions in Premiere are you hoping to use that aren't available in Vegas? I use Premiere 6.5 regularly, and often get razzed by Vegas users who say their app is better...

Not much help, I know, but I hope it's a start...

  3. Actually, I only tried Vegas to see what size it showed. I haven't ever used Vegas 4 for editing yet. As of right now, I still prefer Premiere

  4. OK, I managed to find and fix the problem here:

    http://scenalyzer.com/faqs.html

I used their reg fix to change the MS-DV codec to high res, and it now shows up correctly in Premiere.

  5. Whoaa...I'm confused (not a rarity)...

"Type1 DV-files are normally decoded by the MS-DV Codec, which by default displays the video only in half resolution"

Does this only apply to scenalyzer or all DV. avi captures? I typically capture in Premiere 6.5, should I be worried for any reason?

I wouldn't think it applies, and I've never noticed anything strange before, but...

    Thanks for the noggin-scratcher, rlngstrt

  6. All I know is that this fixed the problem I was having with premiere. since it is a registry change, it doesn't look like it would only apply to scenalyzer. especially since i have never tried scenalyzer and don't even have it installed on my systems.

  7. Whaaa?

How the heck did you come across it if you ...you....don't...uh...

Alright, first thing tomorrow, I'm gonna work w/ some captures and see WTF is up.

Right now, though, I'm giving up, watching "Home Movies" on 'toon and going to bed.
