I have another question....I have also been interested in learning how to build your own home server that you can utilize. However I am not sure where to start and some of the info I read on a few websites used computer components that are sorely outdated (like who would build a server now on Pentium II processors??). I would also like some info on the software recommended to run the server once done....i heard that your own home computer can be made into a server, but I wasnt sure how to do it. And how would one setup home networking? In addition to the new computer I built in January, I also have a laptop that I would like to access my home computer with whenever I am not home. Any ideas/inputs and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have the staff of power, now it's up to me to use it to its full potential to command my life and be successful.

Well to start off, if you really want a server, you'll want to choose between the Intel Xeon or the AMD MP cpu.

My old PII is a server, running Linux. Its fast. A server doesn't need to be ultra-speedy usually. Why do you need one? That's important to know.
If you just want a network, buy a router or hub. -
@TX,
Well, to answer your question, since i also have a laptop, when I usually away from home or something, I thought of the idea of being able to access my home computer from another location. Other than that no real reason, thought it would also be something new for me to learn as well. I figure if others can do it, so can I.

If all you want to do is access your home computer from abroad just install some remote access or ftp software.

Ditto.
PCAnywhere or an FTP.
Forget the server unless you're just wanting to learn it that bad. -

Hi all,
I guess what hardware you want to use for a server depends on what you're going to do with it. I have a server running as/for: FTP Server, Mail Server, Storage, Print Server, Proxy, DHCP Server. It's Running Windows 2000. Because none of the "services" running are very cpu consuming, this all runs on a Pentium 233Mhz clocked at 200Mhz. Temp stays below 25 degrees celcius
So outdated, yes very. But it runs like charm for the things i do with it. I have also considered upgrading to a p3 or so, but what's the use. Nothing goes faster if i do, its just more noise and more power consumption.....
