I would wait until there's more support for the Opteron. Although it's designed to run most 32-bit applications, there's bound to be a lot of bugs with such new technology.
As for speed, the slowest Opteron is supposed to be capable of more operations than the current 3.0Ghz P4. The amount of truth behind that is yet to be seen.
