Hi I use VCDImager to convert .DAT to .MPG and vise versa, but was wondering each time I do this am I loosing quality? Or are the types similar enough that they should be converted with no loss...?

Beretta, you could have just answered the question! You don't have to make an ass of yourself. I searched the forums, and I don't want to make it an hour long process. Yes or No. Thats all we want to know!

Why convert Dat to MPEG ! Just rename the file from .dat to .mpeg or use properties plus to do the same. They are basically the same files ..
-
Converting .dat to .mpeg or vice versa simply involves adding or removing certain special header information attached to the mpeg. The header information is relevant to devices that play the disc as a VCD, but not to computers playing the files directly.
No re-encoding of the MPEG is involved as a result of the conversion, thus there is no quality impact. For editing or CD mastering, though, a .dat should always be converted to an .mpeg using a tool such as VCDGear. -

They are basically the same, but are different enough that converting from DAT to standard MPEG is definitely a good idea. VCDGear can do this.
There is no loss of quality.

Make an ass of myself? I informed you that it had been covered before, and thus would be available in a search. I gave you the information that would allow you to look up your answer, and get more than a "yes/no" answer.

I slightly agree w/ Beretta. People these days look for things using their mouths instead of their eyes more than half of the time.
