I'm running Win2000 and keep getting a Windows Installer box that opens everytime I open IE and sometimes other applications..
The message says that the application that I'm tying to "install" or open can't be processed, then tells me to "browse" to a path that holds the "SGuard.msi" file to install "Veritas RecordNow Manager Update" program.. ?????????? What the heck???
So I uninstalled ALL Veritas applications, but keep getting this error. I can't find any SGuard.msi files anywhere in my system. Can someone what's going on and provide a solution? Thanks much.

this is a Windows issue, and I guess the installer which continuously runs for you is for "Veritas." I have had this issue occuring with several programs, most recently with Office XP Pro. What I did to prevent this from occuring is to disable Windows Installer from the start up items.
Here is what you can do. Go to start, then run, then type "msconfig" and go to "services." There you should see the "windows installer" and you can just uncheck it, reboot, and you should be fine.
I just re-read your post and see you are running Windows 2000. I played around with win2000 a couple of times, but i'm thinking that the "msconfig" function does not work on windows 2000. If it doesn't, you have to enter the command which will get you to your autostart boot programs, such as msconfig. Try it and see if it works. -
Thanks defense! Good info. Will putz with it when I get home tonite.. But one thing.. is there any adverse affect to disabling Installer.. Does it mean I just have to manually check for updates to various programs/apps? For example, I have Windows Update automatically update Win2k; so now, I'll just go to ms.com to update.. ? Thanks!
Also, I found out that the installer is called StorageGuard from http://www.stompinc.com/veritas/sg/sg.phtml?stp . I tried dl'g the latest version --> but it would not install b/c it recognized the previous version in my system. It gave me the option to uninstall the previous version, but could not find it..?? Go figure... It kept giving me the Windows Installer error I described in my original post above.
The path given each time the error pops up is as follows:
C:\DOCUME~1\jbenj\LOCALS~1\Temp\VIES21D5\UM\
When I try to navigate there, I get as far as my "jbenj" folder.. the rest does not exist (or is hidden??). I'm clueless..
In the interim, I'll try to find the cmd to get to the start/boot-up menu in Win2k. Thx again. -
No, there is no adverse affects of diabling the Windows Installer because you are only disabling it for the program which is continuously causing this to start up uneccessarily. There are other methods to fix this issue. One being to just reinstall the entire program which is giving the installer issues, in this case "veritas."
But if you disable Windows Insaller as i'm saying, it will be fine the next time you install a program. Do either of these methods. I have done both and they both resolve this issue. -
Thanks, friend.. I just did a fresh re-install of Win2000 b/c my system overall just felt sluggish (prolly due to all that guessed codec installs..
But thx for info.. i've printed for future reference. The best!
