RGB scart output - very dark picture (Pioneer DV-454)

When switching from the composite output to the RGB output on my SONY tv, i notice the picture is much darker, it seems a bit too dark - i turn the brightness up to about 75% to compensate it... I'm wondering if it is just me needing to get used to the better quality blacks from RGB, but it seems excessive. I find that after increasing the brightess so much, some of the whites are now too bright has anyone experienced anything similar?
