  1. Whats the difference between the Purple surfaces and the silver surfaces on the blank DVD's ? Are each better for different things ?

And whats the differnt between InkJet and Thermal Printable ?

    Thanks guys.

  2. Not sure about the surfaces. But inkjest is where the ink is sort of blown on and thermal is heated - laser - I think ?

  3. ... never seen a silver bottomed DVD-R - do you mean the silver originals ?

In THAT case, the silver ones (or the gold coloured ones) are pressed DVD's and they have an alluminium / amorphus silicon reflective layer in which the data is stamped (the gold coloured dual layer ones get their colour from a different reflective layer, and the way this reflects the light through the first layer and the glue holding them together).

If you're concerned about the colour of the recordables, look for another post in this forum by me for more details (use the search function).

Thermal disc printers usually use a ribbon and the ribbon is effectively placed across the surface of the disc and heated electronically in order to transfer the ink off of the ribbon and onto the disc. The inkjet description above is close enough, however.

Note - for a thermal disc printer, have a look here:

    http://www.tdk-europe.com/products/uk/hardware/04 (link correct 25/04/03).

Note that this does not print on the entire surface of the disc nor full colour prints, before anyone rushes out and buys one !
