Hi, I have a DVR from 2008. The HDMI output can be changed and the options are: 480P, 720P, 1080i and 1080P. There is no explanation in the manual about how to determine which setting to use. My guess is 1080 will provide the best quality but not sure when to use P or i. I have 2 questions:
1) the best setting for playback on an LED TV
2) the best setting for capturing recorded tv for eventual playback on LED TV or PC
Any information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

1. Best Setting for Playback on an LED TV
Recommendation: 1080P
Key reasons:
- Progressive scan (1080P) provides superior image quality
- Displays entire image in a single pass, 60 times per second
- Prevents screen "tearing" in fast-moving images
- Most modern LED TVs are designed to work best with progressive scan
2. Best Setting for Capturing Recorded TV
Recommendation: 1080P
Considerations:
- 1080P offers the highest quality for both TV and PC playback
- Provides clearer, more stable image reproduction
- Ensures compatibility with modern displays
- Captures full detail without the interlacing artifacts of 1080i
Additional Technical Insights
- Both 1080P and 1080i have the same resolution (1920x1080 pixels)
- The key difference is in how images are displayed
- 1080i (interlaced) splits the image into odd and even lines, alternating rapidly
- 1080P (progressive) displays the entire image in one pass
Practical Advice
- If your LED TV is larger than 42 inches, the difference between 1080i and 1080P becomes more noticeable
- Modern TVs can de-interlace 1080i signals, but native 1080P will always look slightly better
- For the best quality, always choose 1080P when possibleThere is nothing wrong .. with my environment
