I have been burning, converting, etc for years... I have used 700mb, 4.5gb, etc.. I have been downloading a lot of 720p and 1080p movies in mkv format recently and need to burn them to disc for storage. I don't plan to play them in any stand alone dvd player, just use the disc for storage. I have my pc connected to my hdtv, so I should be able to to burn the mkv's and watch them later via my pc.

I bought a pack of Memorex DVD+R DL 8x 8.5gb 240min Discs. I tried to burn the normal storage way (cd or dvd iso joliet) in Nero but it said I had to burn as UDF, so I did. Out of 3 tries, one disc didn't have any write failures and it finalized. My Vista laptop can "see" the mkv file sitting on the disc but not actually open it (freezes vlc) or copy it to my desktop (can not read from source file or disc). The XP laptop (which is the one i have connected to my HDTV and the one I would want to watch the mkv's from) won't even recognize the disc, it just spins and spins.. I have never had any problems with burning or reading cd's on these drives.

Is there a better way to burn? Should I be following other steps in Nero for these double layer discs? Should I use isobuster to convert the mkv to an iso file before burning? I've made a few coasters already and this media isn't cheap... I need a solution. My HD is so full and I need to burn off a few hundred gb's of mkv's and avi's... help!! thx!

In windows XP you need UDF Reader.

Hi, I downloaded the file and followed the instructions.. Right click on "thdudf.inf" and choose Install, but it says Install Error - 'The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation'.

I tried installing the Adaptec UDF Reader Driver a few days ago but nothing happened.

What about for the Vista machine?

The problem come from poor quality of Memorex DL discs. Use Verbatim DL. Vista has UDF reader and recognize the disc but can read the file.

Yes. I've installed many many programs in my day.

Could the disc really be to blame? Is THIS what you're talking about?

In another thread, I replied I've found that when recorded DL discs do not play or show corrupt data despite having been given valid OK status on that program that recorded it, it usually means the DVD-rewriter involved is on its last legs and has to be replaced. I should have added that such writer will still record successfully to single-layer media but makes corrupt double-layer recordings. There is a fine balance to be straddled here: media and writer. Of the former, of course, use the best you can get (Verbatim?); of the latter, DVD-rewritable drives really only live for about a year maximum reliably. At only US$20 a piece or so nowadays, it shouldn't be too hard to decide to replace a suspect one.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

oh wait wait.. I just realized, BOTH my laptops are Vista. I have a work/home and i just replaced the home with a new vista recently.. so both should read the UDF no problems.?? It just spins in one, and I'm using ISO buster right now to try to extract the mkv file on the other pc.

Is there a better way to store the large mkv's? Surely an external hd isn't the way to go?

You can get an external drive for the cost of a new burner + blank DL media and not spend time burning discs.

You also won't have to shuffle through discs when you want to access a file.

Try to burn a DL disk with ImageBurn. Go into options and set it at ISO9660+Joliet. If it gives a warning about no layer-break that may be your problem.

Waste of time. Those tests give many false results.

so I got the Verbatim discs today... first disc, write fail. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM. I have no problems burning anything 4.5gb or 700mb or whatever, nothing is wrong with my drive... what the hell??

  16. My guess is it's your writer.
Try burning a 8GB or smaller file, if it still fails then it definately is the writer.
Just for kicks post the log from ImgBurn.

I didn't save the log. I tried burning with both Nero and ImgBurn, both failed.

"Try burning a 8GB or smaller file" Do you mean on the new disc's? The writer has had no probs burning anything until now. It still works to burn the 4.5gb discs.

I'm transferring a big MKV file over to my other laptop that has a dvd writer and gonna try it there.

  18. Ok if both Nero and ImgBurn failed then either the file is too big( >8.5GB ) or the writer is failing, Lite-On's and laptop writers are notoriously bad for DL.
Without a burn log we are just guessing here.

Imgburn automatically saves the log - "Help" menu -> "Imgburn Logs".

Stop burning at the maximum speed and try a DL burn at 2.4x. Many many weird problems reported here with burns that fail with good media have been solved by burning at lower speeds. I would not rule out that your burner is going bad, but definitely try one burn at lower speed and see if that fixes the problem.

Imageburn will compensate for wrong speed selection,.i.e.,if you select 4.0 it will change to 2.4 automatically. I would never use NERO for DL burning and I'm not a NERO hater.

Yet your log says you're burning at MAX. MAX is not 2.4.

  29. Maybe your writers don't like Tropic Thunder, I know I didn't.
